Jan Azar wins 2022-2023 National Coach of the Year by the NFHS Coaches Association

Hebron Christian High School girls basketball head coach, Jan Azar, has been named the 2022-2023 National Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Association.

The Lions head coach was selected to win the award after beating out 23 other head coaches across all sports who were up for the award.

“I’ve been blessed with great kids, they play the right way, and its an honor to be able to coach,” said Coach Azar.

Last season, the legendary head coach led the Lions to an undefeated 32-0 record which ended in a state championship. Azar helped lead Hebron to its second state championship in three years, the Lions only two in program history.

In her prestigious 26-year coaching career, Azar has won 15 state championships, 13 with the Wesleyan School and two with Hebron. She holds a dominant record of 700-122, picking up her 700th win earlier this season against St. Francis.

Azar has maintained success in the coaching business for close to thirty years but states that it would not be possible without her coaching staff and the culture her players have helped create and the support from Hebron.

“I’ve had great coaches that have helped me along the way, surrounding yourself with really good people and that know basketball is important. The players are good people that are easy to coach and are unselfish. Our culture is built around being a good teammate and being unselfish,” she stated.

Azar has distinguished herself as one of the top high school coaches in the state and has had sustained success wherever she is. In 2012, Azar was inducted into the Gwinnett High School Sports Hall of Fame. She remains the winningest basketball head coach ever in the Georgia High School Association.
