John Isner just won the longest Grand Slam singles match in history over Frances Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon. Isner won the fifth and final set 70-68 after finally breaking Mahut on the third day of the match.The total time of the match was more than 11 hours.
The two players easily surpassed the previous record-length for match time at Wimbledon, which was six hours and nine minutes set in 2006. The previous record was six hours and 33 minutes at the 2004 French Open.
Isner and Mahut combined for 215 aces, which also set a Wimbledon record. Isner, the No. 23 seed, advances to the second round to face Thiemo DeBakker tomorrow.
The Greensboro, NC native played at Gerogia from 2004-2007 before earning his bachelor’s degree and joining the pro tour. Isner led the Bulldogs to the 2007 national championship.
