Irwin County has named former Central Gwinnett head coach Larry Harold as the program’s 22 head coach. The Indians are coming off a 12-2 season that saw them reach the quarterfinals or better for the 12 straight year.
Coach Harold brings 10 seasons of head coaching experience and is best known for his early success at Macon County, where he coached NFL star Roquan Smith. Since then, he has held head coaching positions at Brunswick, Central-Macon, Americus-Sumter, and Central Gwinnett. Harold holds an overall coaching record of 45-59, which includes a region championship in 2015 during his tenure at Macon County.
Over the past decade, Irwin County has been one of the top programs in Class A, making seven state finals appearances and winning two championships. The last two head coaches have both won state titles with the Indians. The late Buddy Nobles led the team to the 2019 Class A championship in his final game before his passing. The following season, Casey Soliday won the Class A Public championship in his first year as head coach.
In 2024, Irwin County went 9-1 in the regular season but finished in a three-way tie for first place in Region 2, ultimately dropping them to a 3 seed. However, the Indians made a deep playoff run, advancing to the semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Bowdon.
The hiring of Coach Harold appears to be a strong fit, bringing him back to the type of program where he has found the most success. With Irwin County’s strong tradition and resources, Harold will have the tools needed to keep the Indians at the top of Class A-Division II.
