Hurricane Florence’s heaviest impacts are forecast to make landfall along the Carolina coasts, but this nearness to Georgia’s own coast and the potential for severe weather in the area has cautioned county leaders and forced cancellations of school and after school activities.
Earlier in the week, the GHSA announced “If your school wishes to err on the side of caution, you can move your football games to either Thursday (Sept. 13) or Saturday (Sept 15) without seeking permission from the GHSA office.” Following the announcement, several schools did move their games up to Thursday, but that was before their county stepped in.
The Savannah-Chatham County Public School System announced Wednesday evening that all after school activities would be cancelled for Thursday-Saturday. As a result, Benedictine vs. Groves, Johnson vs. Jenkins, Calvary Day vs. Treutlen, Savannah Country Day vs. Johnson County, Islands vs. Beach, New Hampstead vs. Richmond Hill and Savannah vs. Southeast Bulloch will not be played.
There are other teams near the coast that are still set to play this weeks games. As of now, Glynn Academy at Wayne County as well as Camden County at Brunswick are still set for Friday. Vidalia at Long County and Westside-Augusta at Screven County have been moved up to Thursday with 7 p.m. scheduled kickoffs.
