CLASS 5A (by Brian Jones)

In a game that is likely to determine the champion in Region 8-AAAAA, Grayson utilized its running attack and defense to knock off Brookwood, 10-7. Ean Pemberton finished the night with 134 yards and the Rams improve to 7-0 for the year. … Over in Cobb County the Walton Raiders also remain unbeaten as they squeak past the Milton Eagles, 24-20. Down 20-3 in the third quarter, Michael Boydston scored two touchdowns in the second half to give the Raiders a firm grip on Region 6-AAAAA. … Down in South Georgia in the Winnersville Classic, Lowndes edged Valdosta 14-7. Gerald Demps scored a 1-yard touchdown run for the game-winner and the Vikings extend its winning streak to five against the Wildcats. … After suffering its first loss in two years last week, Northside Warner Robins bounced back this week by defeating Coffee 17-14. Xavier Bacon scored two touchdowns to help Northside improve its record to 6-1.

 

CLASS 4A (by Ricky Dimon)

Upsets and even close games were few and far between in class AAAA on Friday, although the night was not completely without drama. In a crucial battle atop the 6-AAAA standings, Southwest DeKalb (5-1, 5-0) knocked off eighth-ranked Chamblee (4-2, 3-2) 17-10. “Football is a game of inches, and we were a few inches away from a few [big plays] in this game,” said Chamblee coach Mike Collins, who saw his Bulldogs get stopped just short on a fourth-and-5 play at the Southwest 16-yard line with 1:43 left in the game. Panther quarterback Daniel Litt threw a 24-yard touchdown pass and added a game-winning 38-yard scoring jaunt in the fourth quarter.The rest of the classification’s top teams fared better than the hard-luck Bulldogs. Westside-Macon (7-0) had little trouble with Harris County in a 28-7 victory. Sandy Creek (6-0) enjoyed a similarly routine outing, cruising past McIntosh 34-7. Statesboro (7-0, 3-0) did not have it so easy against Glynn Academy, but an impenetrable defense provided for a 3-0 win.Marist (5-1) rolled over Forsyth Central 37-7 in a 6-AAAA showdown to stay ahead of the region pack. Sam McNearny found the end zone three times, including once on defense following an interception.Thomas Co. Central (5-1, 4-0) took care of Lee Co. 35-7. Shawn Bryant put on a show in the form of 237 yards from scrimmage and three touchdowns.In a critical clash among the unseeded ranks, Villa Rica defeated Banneker (4-2, 2-1) 28-7 to remain undefeated in 5-AAAA action. Zay Foster scored the first two touchdowns of the game for the Wildcats (5-1, 3-0) on runs of 32 and 29 yards.

 

CLASS 3A (by Fletcher Proctor)

Even with three of the top four teams ranked in the Class 3A GPB/Score Prep Top-10 on a bye week, the action was hot in the state’s third biggest classification. The Syrupmakers of Cairo hosted Peach County, and Angelo Pease and Reginald Bryant made sure Cairo would not fall from the top spot. Bryant caught a 56-yard touchdown pass from Pease with just under six minutes to play to ice a 16-7 win. Sleeper Dunwoody traveled to Towers and shut down the home team, 49-16. Gainesville hosted East Hall and quarterback Blake Sims got some help from Devon Pierce in a 41-10 win. Washington County met up with highly regarded Thomson and flexed to a 20-0 win. Finally, Connor Shaw and Flowery Branch loaded up against North Hall en route to a 35-7 win. Daniel Drummond rushed for two scores as the Falcons cruised to the win.

 

CLASS 2A (by Corey Mitchell)

After trailing 31-16 in the third quarter, Blessed Trinity pulled off a stunning comeback on the road to defeat Lovett on Friday. Quarterback Kohl Hegetschweiler scored the game-winner from three yards out, and the Titan defense recovered a Lovett fumble in the dying moments to end matters and pick up the 42-38 win. Region 1-AA frontrunner Fitzgerald maintained its flawless record with a comfortable 35-14 victory over Berrien. The win keeps the second-ranked Purple Hurricanes on top of the region, one game ahead of 5-1 Brooks County.  The two teams will face off on Oct. 24th to most likely decide the top seed heading into the playoffs. East Laurens pulled off the shocker of the week in Class 2A, beating the seventh-ranked Jefferson County Warriors in an unexpected 35-7 rout at Falcon Field. Senior Terrence Lewis ran wild on the evening, running for 144 yards on 18 totes and three scores to help drop Jefferson Co. to 6-1 on the campaign and surely shake up next week’s Class 2A rankings.

 

CLASS 1A (by Derek Wiley)

This Friday was a slow night in 1A football. No. 1 ranked Emanuel County Institute (6-0) won big behind Washaun Ealey’s four touchdown runs, defeating Treutlen 49-22 in a Region 3 matchup. Nos. 2 and 4, Wilcox County and Lincoln County, were both off. No. 3 Clinch County (6-1) defeated Lanier County 28-7 in Region 1. And Brookstone (6-0) defeated Stewart-Quitman 40-6 in Region 4 to round out the top five. No. 7 Athens Academy (6-0) went out of its region to beat independent Mt. Paran Christian, 41-7. James Colquitt scored on touchdowns runs of nine and 44 yards. Quarterback Mark Sanders threw two touchdown passes, including a 61-yard touchdown pass to Everett Young. The most anticipated game of the week came between two unranked teams in Region 2 which have had a lot of success in the past, Dooly County and Hawkinsville. But even that game wasn’t as close as expected as the Dooly County Bobcats defeated the Red Devils 25-7. Both teams are now 1-1 in region play. The better game of the night in Region 2 was between No. 10-ranked Turner County and Telfair County. Turner County won 28-22 thanks to solid quarterback play by Kenveyon Newberry, who completed 15 of 30 passes for 247 yards and rushed for two touchdowns.
