Hebron Christian infielder Destin Matthews announced his decision to continue his baseball career at Greensboro College.
The senior has appeared in 22 games for the Lions this season as the team has compiled a 14-9 record so far this season.
“Greensboro showed great interest in me and showed it during my visit, they gave my family and I the red carpet treatment,” said Matthews. “The program has been very successful historically which is very attractive and their player development is something I’m looking forward to as well. Academically they are strong and their small professor to student class ratio is something that I’m very comfortable with. I’m looking forward to getting on campus and competing.”
Matthews gives credit to Greensboro College coaches Chris Fenisey and Nick DeTringo for helping him find his next home to continue playing baseball
“They were very detailed on the program and where they see me fitting in athletically and academically,” said Matthews.
During his senior season so far, Matthews has been effective at the plate accumulating a .259 batting average, 14 hits, seven RBIs, along with three doubles, a triple and a home run on the season.
Matthews has also been very effective around the bases this season as well totaling seven stolen bases, the second-highest mark on the team through the first 23 games.
The newest Greensboro College-commitment has played clean baseball as well in the field as he is one of few Hebron starters to not record an error this season, proving to be a reliable option in the infield for the Lions.
Last season as a junior, Matthews hit for .260 and accounted for 13 hits, nine RBIs and a home run.
Matthews is in his third season playing for the Hebron Christian varsity baseball team and has appeared in 48 games with the program over the span of three years.
Matthews future school, the Greensboro College Pride are 16-10 this season and are on a three-game win-streak.
Matthews and Hebron currently are ranked No. 4 in the Score Atlanta Week 8 Baseball Rankings and are in a series against Prince Avenue Christian that will resume on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Hebron.
