Harbrueger honored; baseball welcomes eight newcomers

Kay Harbrueger was named CAA Co-Player of the week for her outstanding performance against Tennessee Tech. Harbrueger led the Panthers to a resounding victory by depositing two goals in Saturday’s 5-1. The first goal opened the game and the season for the Panthers, as Harbrueger pushed the team to an early lead just four minutes into the contest. Harbrueger’s four points moved her into a tie for 10th place on the Georgia State career list with 51 career points. The goals are the 17th and 18th of her career. … Apryl Goodwin, Kara Vezza, Kari Quinn, and Kay Habrueger each scored to lead Georgia State over Winthrop 4-0 last Sunday. The win moves Georgia State to 3-0-0 on the year. The team will have the week off and prepare to host North Florida on Friday at 3 p.m. The 3-0-0 start enjoyed by the Panthers is the first in school history. Georgia State has now beaten their first three opponents by a combined score of 13-1.

In men’s soccer, junior transfer Stephan Minyono scored both goals for the Georgia State, as the Panthers came away with a tie in the final exhibition match of the season, 2-2 at Alabama-Birmingham. Sophomore midfielder Joey Syfert is credited with the assist for the second and tying goal.

The volleyball team fell to 0-3 on the season after a 3-0 loss to Georgia (2-1) in the final match of the Georgia Bulldog Invitational on Sunday night. The Panthers were led by senior Michelle Trimble and freshman Torrie Brown, who each collected nine kills, while senior Liz Schaab added eight. Earlier Sunday morning the Panthers fell to Georgia Tech 25-20, 25-16, 25-18. State got a match-high 22 assists from newcomer Jessica Tjaden, while senior Liz Schaab had seven kills. Redshirt sophomore Audrey Cantrell added a team-high 11 digs. In the tournament opener, the Panthers fell to Furman 3-1. Cantrell was named to the All-Tournament Team after a solid performance in all three matches of the event. State will return to the court on Friday when the Panthers face Xavier in the first match of the Regency Suites Georgia Tech Classic at 4 p.m. 

IN OTHER NEWS 

Head coach Greg Frady and the baseball team welcomed eight newcomers to the squad. The Panthers will add a pair of junior-college players—Brett Maxwell and Carl Moniz—for the upcoming season, as well as six high-school student-athletes – Daniel Blaustein (Holy Innocents HS), Chris Hallum (Peachtree Ridge HS), Justin Malone (Abingdon HS, Va.), Ben Marshall (Loganville HS), Drew Parker (McEachern HS) and Brandon Williams (Kell HS). Moniz comes to State after completing two years at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Community College where he hit .386 with 16 doubles. Maxwell, a Douglasville native, joins the Panthers after playing at Chipola Community College, where he helped lead his team to the 2008 Junior College World Series. Panther baseball begins fall practice on Sept. 17.

Georgia State’s 4th annual CAA Blood Challenge will be held Sept. 23 on campus in the Sports Arena. The annual blood donor drive is competition among the 12 CAA universities to get the most pints of blood. Georgia State partners with the American Red Cross for its annual drive.
