HALFTIME BLOG: Falcons grab 14-7 lead before break

We are in for a battle, folks.

This is the first time that the Falcons have played in front of a national audience for the 2009 season, and they are not disappointing the masses, as they’ve taken a 14-7 advantage at the half.

The Falcons offense got off to a slow start with three-and-outs in its first three possessions. Chicago was able to get a few drives going in the first thanks to the arm of Jay Cutler, who went 9-of-12 with 73 yards, but he did throw an interception on the Bears opening drive and the Bears were kept scoreless in the first.

The second quarter was a different story for both teams and both offenses started to wake up. Chicago got the scoring started in the second quarter when Cutler threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Jonny Knox to take the lead. Later in the quarter, the Bears looked to score again as they were driving towards Falcons territory but another Cutler interception by DeCoud stop the drive and the Falcons turned that into a Matt Ryan 45-yard touchdown pass the Roddy White to tie the game at seven.

Towards the end of the second, the Falcons were able to put together a 12-play, five minute drive which ended with a Ryan 10-yard touchdown pass to Tony Gonzalez to take the lead for the first time tonight.

One thing that the Falcons would like to do better in the second half is get the running game going as Michael Turner has only rushed for three yards on six carries. The passing game is looking sharp for the Birds as Ryan has thrown for 119 yards and two touchdowns.

One injury note, Jerious Norwood has went into the locker room with a hip injury and his return to the game is questionable. He was leading the Falcons in rushing with 21 yards on four carries.
