HALFTIME BLOG: Dawgs use special teams to gain 14-7 advantage

In a surprising first half, the Independence Bowl is just 14-7 at the half after being scoreless until the final three minutes of play. A game that was expected to turn out bushels of yards and points has turned into a defensive struggle. Georgia has had little success running the football and seemed to have a similar gameplan to their run-heavy strategy that they employed in the tech game. However, Joe Kines’ A&M defense has risen to the challenge and stopped the Bulldogs’ running game rather effectively.

At the half, UGA has just 26 yards on 15 attempts.

As usual, Washaun Ealey has been more effective than starter Caleb King, but has fewer carries and did not get into the game until mid-first quarter. Ealey has 16 yards on five carries while King has just nine yards on eight carries.

THE SCORING
A&M opened the scoring on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jerrod Johnson to Jamie McCoy with 2:42 left in the half. The Aggie drive covered 75 yards on 10 plays. A key play in the drive was a 41-yard pass down to the Georgia 15. A&M scored on the next play.

The Dawgs didn’t waste any time countering the Aggies’ score. Brandon Boykin returned the ensuing kickoff 81-yard for a touchdown.

Georgia stopped A&M on their next possession and forced the Ags into a punting situation. However, Baccari Rambo blocked the punt and recovered it on the A&M two. On the next play, King plunged in for the Bulldog touchdown. King appeared to have lost possession and the ball was recovered by Michael Moore in the end zone. But King was ruled to have broken the plane of the goal line prior to fumbling.

A&M ran out of time on their last drive when the clock ran out while Johnson attempted to spike the ball. A&M head coach Mike Sherman protested, but the half was allowed to end.
