Jefferson 48, Discovery 0

How the game was won: Preseason all-state running back Colby Wood ran in a pair of first quarter touchdowns and a Hayden Kilgore 27-yard field goal to give visiting Jefferson a 17-0 lead. Kilgore booted a 28-yard field goal to extend the lead in the second quarter and Bryce Moore found Wood through the air for an 8-yard touchdown pass with 8:38 left in the half. Zac Corbin recovered a fumble for a touchdown after a botched Discovery snap.

Top Performers: Jefferson’s Colby Wood rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns off of 13 carries and also hauled in a second quarter touchdown pass.

South Gwinnett 54, Central Gwinnett 21

How the game was won: The tables were turned in Gwinnett County as South Gwinnett blasted Central Gwinnett to make a season opening statement. The Comets, coming off a 2-8 record in 2015, blew past the Black Knights who come off an 8-5 campaign. Transfer Josh Samuel tagged on touchdown runs of 66 yards and 13 yards for Central Gwinnett but Seth Johnston powered the Comets. The quarterback scored on a 1-yard sneak to take a 14-7 lead in the second quarter before hitting Trevor Ward on an 11-yard touchdown strike. Johnson also tagged on a 13-yard score and tossed a five-yard touchdown. Trevor Ward piled on another score in the second half.

Top Performers: Seth Johnston accounted for five touchdowns, passing for three and rushing for two.

Greater Atlanta Christian 31, Lovett 6

How the game was won: Brooks Buce put host Greater Atlanta Christian on the board with a 54-yard field goal in the first quarter. Jonathan Rose added a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:34 left in the half for a 10-0 edge. Lovett’s Brady Tindall opened the third quarter with a 71-yard touchdown run but the Lions 2-point conversion attempt failed to keep it at 10-6. The Spartans’ ground game took over the game from this point and quickly piled on 21 unanswered points. Kyler McMichael ran in touchdowns from 59 and 27 yards and Rose added his second 1-yard score.

Top performers: McMichael accounted for 213 of Greater Atlanta Christian’s 272 net rushing yards and took a game-high 22 carries. Tindall led Lovett with 105 rushing yards off of 15 carries.

Alcovy 27, Duluth 19

How the game was won: Alcovy scored late in the third quarter on a 12-yard Adrian Robinson touchdown run to go up 27-13. Duluth scored with four minutes remaining to pull within eight points and then stopped Alcovy to get the ball back, but the Alcovy defense held to clinch the win. The game was tied 13-13 at halftime.

Top performers: Visiting Alcovy scored on its first play from scrimmage on a 60-yard touchdown pass from Quindrelin Hammonds to Koby Perry. Demetrius Tuggle had an interception return for a touchdown, and Trey Smith had two interceptions. Robinson helped set up his third-quarter score with a 40-yard run. Alcovy finished with 249 yards rushing as a team and five sacks.
