When North Gwinnett travels to Newnan for a quarterfinal-round game on Friday, there shouldn’t be any surprises in store for either team. These two squads met in the same round last year, with North Gwinnett pulling out a 38-35 victory.
Boise State commit Michael Tamburo makes the North Gwinnett offense go, and he’s got a litany of weapons to choose from. Senior Tyler Jarry is an excellent pass-catcher and can run the ball well, tight end Kenny Barnes is a threat to pick up yards through the air, and sophomore receiver C.J. Uzomah had a breakout game last week against Lassiter.
On the other side, Newnan quarterback Russell Powell, like Tamburo, is a threat to run or pass. On defense, the Cougars boast one of the state’s top safety prospects in Alec Ogletree, a junior. The Newnan defense has pitched an unbelievable eight shutouts in 12 games, and has only given up 28 points on the entire season.
Though these teams met exactly a year ago, Newnan will likely be the favorite this time around. The Cougars retained almost every key player from last year’s team; North Gwinnett was thought to be rebuilding this season.
