The following is an excerpt from the July 17 edition of the Georgia High School Football Daily, an e-mail newsletter compiled by longtime Georgia high school football writers Todd Holcomb and Chip Saye:
In early June, GHSF Daily published its tentative preseason all-state teams. Now, having heard your critique and done a little more research, we’re ready to make it official with a few changes.

GRADY STADIUM MIGHT BE CLOSED FOR SEASON
Grady Stadium, a venue for Atlanta high school football games since 1947, could be closed this season.
Games scheduled for the midtown stadium on the campus of Grady High are being moved to Lakewood Stadium and other venues while the 62-year-old field gets new turf and has other work done. It might take all season.
The Georgia High School Association is not releasing the official 2009 schedule until the issue is resolved. There are 17 games scheduled for Grady, seven that involve Grady High.
“It’s a big deal when you’re giving away home-field advantage,” Grady coach Ronnie Millen said. “I guess we’ll have to adjust. It’s definitely not good for me.”
Grady’s opener against Maynard Jackson, scheduled for Aug. 28, has been moved up a day to Thursday and will be played at Lakewood, Millen said. Millen expects most of Grady’s home games to be played at Lakewood or possibly Clark-Atlanta University’s college stadium.
Atlanta Public Schools director of athletics Billette Owens Ashford and athletics coordinator Fred Price were on vacation and unavailable for comment Thursday.
“The stadium is undergoing renovations, and the first couple of games can’t be played there,” said an APS spokesperson who would not give her name. “We’re not sure how many games have to be moved.”
But Millen said no work has begun on the field turf, which means it’s more likely the stadium will sit out the season.
“I’m hearing we might not be in it at all,” Millen said. “I’m hearing a bunch of different things going on.”
