The first day of the GHSA State Fast-Pitch Softball State Championships concluded at the Columbus Softball Complex Thursday. In the state’s highest class, Milton will face North Gwinnett and East Coweta will meet Lambert in the second round of the winner’s bracket Friday.
Milton defeated Mill Creek 7-2, North Gwinnett beat Colquitt County 12-0, East Coweta outlasted Cherokee 1-0 and Lambert defeated Hillgrove 4-0. In the first round of the loser’s bracket, Mill Creek will play Colquitt County and Cherokee will face Hillgrove.
Here’s how the other classes played out.
Class 6A: River Ridge will play Sequoyah and Cambridge will meet Lassiter in the second round of the winner’s bracket. River Ridge beat Pope 7-2, Sequoyah defeated Dacula 4-2, Cambridge outlasted Buford 3-1 and Lasster bested Creekview 1-0. In the loser’s bracket, Pope will play Dacula and Buford will meet Creekview.
Class 5A: Starr’s Mill will play Loganville and Northside-Columbus will play Jones County in the second round of the winner’s bracket. Starr’s Mill beat Woodland-Cartersville 4-0, Loganville beat Calhoun 12-2, Northside-Columbus defeated Chamblee 13-8 and Jones County won 11-0 over Blessed Trinity. In the loser’s bracket, Woodland-Cartersville will play Calhoun and Chamblee will face Blessed Trinity.
Class 4A: Flowery Branch beat Northwest Whitfield 4-0 and will face Heritage-Catoosa in the second round of the winner’s bracket after Heritage beat North Oconee 7-4 in the first round. Madison County beat Cedartown 13-4 and Central-Carroll beat West Laurens 6-2 and will meet in the second round of the winner’s bracket. In the loser’s bracket, Northwest Whitfield will play North Oconee and Cedartown will face West Laurens.
Class 3A: Sonoraville narrowly advanced past Southeast Bulloch 1-0, Appling County defeated Jackson 2-1, Dawson County beat Pike County 13-5 and Harlem moved past Pierce County 7-2. In the second round of the winner’s bracket, Sonoraville will play Appling County and Dawson County will meet Harlem. Southeast Bulloch will play Jackson and Pike County meets Pierce County in the first round of the loser’s bracket.
Class 2A: Heard County advanced after an 11-0 victory over Lovett, Jeff Davis beat Chattooga 11-1, Bremen outlasted Vidalia 6-4 and Dade County beat Union County 5-2. In the second round of the winner’s bracket, Heard County will play Jeff Davis and Bremen will face Dade County. In the loser’s bracket, Lovett faces Chattooga and Vidalia plays Union County.
Class A Public: Emanuel County beat Gordon Lee 4-1, Social Circle beat Screven County 8-0, Lanier County defeated Crawford County 8-0 and Academy for Classical Education won 5-2 against Telfair County. Emanuel County will play Social Circle and Lanier County will meet Academy for Classical Education in the winner’s bracket. In the loser’s bracket first round, Gordon Lee will play Screven County and Crawford County will face Telfair County.
Class A Private: Mount Vernon beat Mount Paran 7-5, George Walton beat Strong Rock 9-2, Tattnall Square beat Brookstone 10-5 and Wesleyan outlasted ELCA 2-1. Mount Vernon will face George Walton and Tattnall will play Wesleyan in the second round of the winner’s bracket. In the loser’s bracket, Mount Paran will meet Strong Rock and Brookestone will play ELCA.
