The GHSA has announced that they have added a week to the end of the regular season, moving the first three rounds of the playoffs back by one week.
Due to the unprecedented damage and impact of Hurricane Helene on the state of Georgia, with a number of region games postponed indefinitely, the GHSA has decided to extend the regular season by one week. This will move the first three rounds of the playoffs back by one week. However, due to the scheduled bye week on the Friday after Thanksgiving, the semifinals and finals will still take place on their originally scheduled dates.
Many schools in the southern and eastern parts of the state have been unable to return to school and may miss another week of the season. Some schools may still have to play two games in one week, but the added week will allow these affected schools to play two games in a week only once, instead of twice.
Schools that were able to play games over the past week will now have an extra bye week between the regular season and playoffs. Those scheduled to play non-region games will have the option to reschedule those games to the final week of the season or use it as an extra bye week to rest before the playoffs.
The GHSA has yet to make a decision regarding other fall sports affected by the storm. However, these sports are generally easier to reschedule, as teams can play multiple games in a week. Cross country will struggle more with meet cancellations than most other sports, as they are harder to make up.
