While much of the football team’s practice time has been spent at the new facility near campus, there have been a few opportunities to get into the Georgia Dome as they did last Saturday. The timing was good because the Falcons had just played the Dolphins in an exhibition game the night before. The Panthers took advantage of the time and held their second scrimmage of the preseason. With head coach Bill Curry out of town tending to personal business, assistant head coach George Pugh commented on his observations. “”I thought the defense came out with a little more fight in the beginning, and they controlled the first part of the scrimmage. Then the offense woke up and got a little spark and did some really good things.” One of the highlights was a leaping touchdown catch by Jordan Giles, on a nine-yard pass from number one quarterback Bo Schlechter, who also threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to tight end Arthur Williams. Giles has shown throughout the pre-season that he has some of the best hands among the receiving corps. “Jordan is a really good competitor,” said Pugh, who coaches the wide receivers. He does a lot of things really well.”
Another good story is the continued versatility of Kalan Jenkins. The senior from Midlothian, Texas is working at his fourth position since arriving at Georgia State. After coming in as a tight-end he’s spent time at defensive end, defensive tackle, and now he’s working at nose guard. “I’ve put on a little weight, but I’m not the typical nose guard,” he said. “I just try to fight hard. Coach [John] Thompson says that’s why he wants me there. He likes the fight that I have and he says I don’t get driven back on double teams. I try to stay a lot lower that the bigger offensive linemen and I try to use quickness to beat them off the ball.”
