Georgia State baseball honored by Dugout Club

Georgia State baseball alum Tommy Barber presented head coach Greg Frady with the team of the year award last Saturday morning.

Coming off of its most successful season in school history, the Georgia State baseball team was honored as the Georgia Dugout Club College Team of the Year. The award came as part of the annual coaches’ clinic at the Atlanta Downtown Hilton.

Georgia State head coach Greg Frady accepted the award on behalf of the team. It was only fitting that the Panthers earn the award as Georgia State baseball graduate and long-time supporter of Panther baseball, Tommy Barber, served as host of the awards ceremony.

The annual clinic and awards ceremony awarded both high school and collegiate honors from throughout the state of Georgia. Just prior to Georgia State receiving the top award of the ceremony, a group of former major league baseball players, which included Cecil Fielder, Otis Nixon, Delino DeShields and Marquis Grissom spoke to the group of coaches that spanned all levels of baseball in the state.

The award capped a 2009 season in which the Panthers stepped up on the national baseball scene. After winning a school record 39 wins and earning the school’s first CAA Championship, the Panthers advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the first time, facing cross-town rival Georgia Tech in the opening game.

During the regular season, the Panthers defeated the #3 Yellow Jackets, the highest ranked opponent GSU has ever defeated in school history. State tied a school-record with eight straight wins to finish the season, sweeping through the CAA Championship in four games. The Panthers broke more than a dozen school records during the historic season.

Georgia State officially started practice and preparations for the 2010 season on Friday and will have three weeks of work before the start of the season.

The Panthers will open the season at #7 Florida State on February 19th at 4 p.m. in Tallahassee. The home opener against USC-Upstate comes on February 23rd, also at 4 p.m.
