Georgia Elite Classic updates schedule, two senior teams from Georgia to compete

The 10th annual Georgia Elite Classic will have two Georgia Senior All-Star teams face off as part of its four-game TV package on Peachtree TV and two big digital platforms on Thursday, Dec. 29.

The game will kick off at 12:45 p.m. after the Eighth Grade All-Star Game opens the day at historic Barron Stadium at 10 a.m. The Junior All-Star Game will follow at 3:30 p.m. before the nightcap between the freshmen and sophomores at 6:15 p.m.

Initially, a group of seniors from Georgia were to play a team from Alabama but the Classic decided to stay with the format it has used in years past.

“Things are moving quickly and trying to put together a competitive team from Alabama just wasn’t happening,’’ said I.J. Rosenberg, the president of Score Atlanta which owns the Classic. “Alabama has their own senior All-Star games and we respect that so we are going to work on Georgia playing Alabama in 2023.’’

The Classic has used several formats in the past including playing a game between juniors and seniors but said Rusty Mansell of 247Sports who picks the players, “Based off what I have seen with the portal, there are going to be so many kids available at this time going into the second signing day in February. The value of participating on TV will be very beneficial to these seniors in the state of Georgia.’’

The Classic focuses on helping seniors take the next step towards playing in college. More than 1,500 players that have participated in a game in the Classic have gone on and played college football.

“We want to get to a point where we are bringing in All-Star teams from other states,’’ said Rosenberg. “But I have to agree with my partner Rusty and the fact that we have a lot more seniors in this state who because of the transfer portal need the push to get college deals. So instead of having 45-50 Georgia seniors this year, we will have somewhere around 95 and we want to take care of our own.’’

The games will also be available on the Atlanta News First (formerly CBS46) app and the National Federation High School Network.
