Junior Gold 42, Junior Blue 41
In the end, it was go-for-broke attitude that decided the game when the Blue team attempted a 2-point conversion with 1:26 left in the game, choosing to try for the victory rather than kicking the extra point.
With no overtime in the GEC All-Star games, it was a wise decision when a field goal would have tied the game at 41. However, the Gold team defense intercepted the jump-pass to ensure the victory.
The Blue team was trailing 34-21 with 9:52 left in the third quarter but scored on a 76-yard interception returned for a touchdown by South Gwinnett defensive back Evin McDowell and a 6-yard run by LaGrange quarterback Dylan Barber to take a 35-34 lead with 7:26 left in the game.
Dacula quarterback Garrison Cantrell passed to South Paulding receiver Matthew Patchin to retake the lead for the Gold team 42-35. The Blue team capped a seven-play, 70-yard drive with a 26-yard pass from Barber to Cambridge wide out Craig Dandridge to leave the Blue team trailing 42-41.
The Gold team built a 14-0 lead after a short run by Sequoyah running back Will Wajecki and a 6-yard touchdown run from Peachtree Ridge running back Bryce Green. Green caught a 50-yard pass from Callaway quarterback Blake Harrington with 14:50 left in the second quarter to expand the lead to 21-0.
Dandridge caught an 11-yard pass from Pepperell quarterback Moss Tant – who was 4-of-4 passing for 117 yards and two touchdowns – to cut into the deficit, 21-7. LaGrange quarterback Dylan Barber scored on a 5-yard run to leave the Blue team trailing 21-14.
Cantrell scored on an 8-yard run to expand the Gold team’s lead to 28-14 with 3:25 remaining before halftime. With 40 seconds left in the first half, Dandridge caught his second touchdown of the game on a 51-yarder from Tant to leave the Blue team trailing 28-21 at half. Cantrell passed to Patchin with 9:52 left in the third quarter left in the third quarter to expand the lead to 34-21.
Cantrell was 11-of-18 passing for 248 yards and two touchdowns while Harrington was 4-of-7 passing for 91 yards and a touchdown. Patchin had two catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns.
Dandridge finished with four catches for 113 yards and three touchdowns while Barber had 12 runs for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Barber was 7-of-11 passing for 102 yards and a touchdown.
Sophomore Blue 70, Freshman Gold 7
It was a brutal showing in the nightcap game of the Georgia Elite Classic as the fog rolled in at McEachern’s Dorsey Field in Powder Springs Saturday.
The sophomores were led by Keyon Standifer, who had four catches for 130 yards and four touchdowns. Tylan Glover had six carries for 142 yards and a touchdown while Moonie Gipson, Javarris Warner and Teddy Jarrard each have one rushing touchdown. Ben Musser was 7-of-9 passing for 175 yards and two touchdowns while Jarrard was 8-of-11 passing for 62 yards and a touchdown.
The freshman scored on a run from Kalil Charles.
Senior Gold 28, Senior Blue 24
The senior Gold Team can thank Adairsville’s safety Jamarian Pullum for the game-saving and game-winning interception with less than a minute remaining in the Senior game at the 12th annual Georgia Elite Classic at McEachern’s Dorsey Field in Powder Springs.
“It was great to go out here and grab the interception to get the win,” Pullum said. “I was glad to come out and meet new people and play against some friends and new players.”
The Gold team opened scoring on a 2-yard run from Cedartown’s Juelz Davis with 10:15 left in the first quarter. A 45-yard field goal from Bleckley County kicker Ford Childers cut into the lead 7-4. Any field goal past 40 yards in the GEC is worth four points.
The Gold team expanded the lead on a 2-yard run from Apalachee back Favian Williford with 13:45 left in the second quarter. Pope quarterback Hudson DeLine connected with Habersham Central receiver Zeke Whittington on a 46-yard touchdown pass to lead the Blue team trailing 14-11.
The Gold team expanded its lead on a 20-yard pass from Mount Pisgah quarterback Ryan Dean to Lee County receiver Jordan Houston with 5:28 left in the third quarter. A 9-yard pass from Woodland quarterback JD Trail to Pace Academy wide receiver Cooper Williams with 14:56 in the fourth quarter put the Gold team ahead 28-11.
The Blue team began its comeback on a 6-yard touchdown run from East Paulding defensive lineman Kewan Donald. Whittington caught a 28-yard touchdown from DeLine with 2:36 left and then held the Gold team to a fourth-and-out to get the ball back, setting up the late-game, game-sealing interception.
Dean was 7-of-14 passing for 96 yards and a touchdown while Trail was 9-of-14 passing for 54 yards and a touchdown. Houston caught three passes for 29 yards and a touchdown. Davis finished with 15 carries for 73 yards and a score while Williford had 14 runs for 72 yards and a touchdown.
On defense, Crisp County defensive end Zymarion Hudson had five unassisted tackle with two sacks. Cameon McGhee made four tackles with two assists and a sack.
DeLine was 6-of-17 passing for 120 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Blue team’s offensive attack. Whittington had 10 catches for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Cedartown defensive back Demarcus Gardner East Jackson linebacker Aaron Blackmon and Hillgrove defensive lineman Nick Mathious led the Blue team defense with five tackles each.
8th Grade Gold 30, 8th Grade Blue 28
A walk-off game-winning touchdown from Charlie Baxter to Braylon Everett lifted the Gold team past the Blue team in the 8th grade All-Star game at McEachern’s Dorsey Field in the 12-annual Georgia Elite Classic.
While nursing a 24-14 lead, the Gold team watched the Blue team score two unanswered touchdowns in the final 3:32 left in the game to overtake the lead with 35 seconds left. The play – a 37-yard pass to Athens Davenport – gave the Blue team its first lead of the game with less than a minute left, forcing the Gold team to mount its 6-play, 70-yard game-winning drive.
Opening scoring, Cal Morrison caught a 1-yard pass to put the Gold team ahead 7-0 with 7:26 left in the first quarter. The Blue team tied the game of a 14-yard run from Athens Davenport. The Gold team cut into the deficit on a 52-yard pass from Ryan Zegarelli to Jacoby Beard early in the second quarter.
A 19-yard pass from Noah Dungan to Jahlil Page put the Gold team ahead 21-7 with 5:33 left in the first half. Davenport caught a 55-yard pass from Jordan Sharpe to leave the Blue team trailing 21-14. Jacoby Beard’s 21-yard field goal put the Gold team ahead 24-14 with 4:19 left in the third quarter.
The Blue team cut into the lead on a 49-yard pass from Wailer Sands to Hudson Kalb with 3:32 left in the game. Davenport caught a 37-yard touchdown from Knox Whitworth with :35 seconds left in the game, setting up the late-game heroics.
Zack Parker was 9-of-15 passing for 74 yards and a touchdown while Baxter was 4-of-7 passing for 39 yards and a touchdown for the Gold team.
Blue 7th Grade 20, Gold 7th Grade 0
And in the first game of the Georgia Elite Classic’s five-game stint at Dorsey Field on the McEachern campus in Powder Springs, the Blue team took full advantage of Eli Knight’s size and speed to overwhelm the competition.
“I just tried to play the best of my ability,” Jackson County’s Knight said. “It’s fun to come out here and meet new people. Sometimes with football, you don’t get to meet new people on other teams and become friends.
Knight had a hand in the first two touchdowns by the Blue team on a 29-yard pass to Mossy Creek defensive end Caden Dollar with 8:05 left in the first quarter. Knight, who starred on the defensive side as well, returned an interception for a touchdown with 1:36 left before halftime.
Xavier McQueen expanded the lead with a 29-yard pass to Dollar to cap scoring with 7:59 left in the game.
