The McIntosh and GAC boys and girls teams each won state championships Friday.
It was the McIntosh boys’ second straight championship and the Chiefs now have a 45-game winning streak in tact over two full seasons. The Chiefs had little trouble with Houston County by winning tonight’s final 8-1. McIntosh went wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in AAAAA. It is the fifth state championship for McIntosh.
The GAC boys also completed an undefeated season and were also ranked No. 1 throughout the season in Class AA. The Spartans beat two-time defending champ Westminster 3-1 tonight in the third game of the season between the Region 6 rivals. It is the fourth boys soccer title for GAC.
McIntosh’s girls team beat Region 4-nemesis Starr’s Mill 4-1. the Panthers actually won the region and held its top seed in the state tourney while the Chiefs came in as the third seed. It is the ninth state title for the McIntosh girls team.
GAC’s girls won the state championship 3-0 over Region 6 member Lovett. The Spartans outscored their playoff foes a combined 38-2. GAC’s coach, Troy Bendickson, has retired now that the season is over. It is the second title for the Spartans in girls soccer; the other came in 2012.
