G-BRAVES BEAT: Gwinnett walks-off on Durham

The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves won their second game of the season on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Willie Cabrera on Sunday afternoon at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. The Gwinnett Braves (2-2) are now tied with Durham (2-2) for second place in the International League South division, two games behind division leader Charlotte (4-0).

It Was Over When: Braves third baseman Shawn Bowman led off the bottom of the 11th with a single and was pinch ran for by Jordan Schafer. His at bat was followed by a walk from 2B Daniel Nelson and a sac bunt by C Matt Kennelly. OF Jose Constanza was then intentionally walked to load the bases for right fielder Willie Cabrera, who hit a game winning sac fly to right field, allowing Schafer to score and win the game for the G-Braves.

Braves Beat:

On the Mound: RHP Jacob Thompson made his Triple-A debut and pitched well enough, going 4.0 IP and yielding 6 H, 3 R/2 ER with a BB and 2 K’s and a hit batsman. RHP Scott Proctor rebounded beautifully today, pitching a perfect 11th inning, striking out two and receiving the win.

At the plate: The team got going a bit offensively, as five players had multi-hit games (CF Jose Constanza: 2-for-4, SB, IBB; SS Diory Hernandez: 2-for-5, 2B, R, 1B; Mauro Gomez: 2-for-5, 2B, R; RF Joe Mather: 2-for-5, RBI, R; C Matt Kennelly 2-for-4, 2B, RBI). Second baseman Daniel Nelson hit the first G-Braves homerun of the 2011 season in the bottom of the 9th, which pushed the game into extra innings.

The Opposition:

On the Mound: RHP Edgar Gonzalez went 3.2 IP while allowing 7 H, 3 R/ER with 4 K’s. RHP Cory Wade pitched 2.0 perfect IP in relief, with two strikeouts.

At the Plate: G-Braves killer LF Justin Ruggiano did it again, going 1-for-3 with 2 RBI for the Bulls. OF Desmond Jennings, who hit a first pitch homerun in Saturday night’s loss, continued to hit on Sunday. Jennings went 1-for-4 with 2 R, and a walk. Overall on the young season he is now batting .353.

On Deck: Gwinnett begins a three game series with another IL South rival in the Norfolk Tides. The G-Braves will get a ML Rehab start from RHP Jair Jurrjens (No record), who will face off against LHP Troy Patton (No record). The game can be heard on the home of the G-Braves, WDUN 550 AM/102.9 FM. The matchup will be televised on CSS, as well.

Etc: Monday is “Kids Eat Free Night” at Coolray Field. Mom and dad can bring their children under 12 years of age out and get the kids dinner on the G-Braves. The free meal will consist of one hot dog, one soda and one bag of chips. It’s also “Golf Expo Night,” when you can come out and get tips on how to improve your game now that you’ve watched The Masters all last week.
