FULTON BEAT: Eagles take over first place in baseball; Lovett on winning streak

Milton took over first place in Region 6, Class 5A this week after they won three region games last week and Roswell lost. The wins included shutouts of 10-0 over Campbell, 3-0 over Pope and a 2-1 win over Alpharetta. Leading 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth against Campbell, the Eagles loaded the bases and then got RBI singles from Luke Ewing and Sam Knight and a two-run double from Robert Holmes. The game ended on the 10-run rule. Pitcher Will Thomas allowed only two hits and had five strikeouts to record his third victory of the season.

MORE FROM THE DIAMOND …
Against Pope, the Eagles got a clutch two-run homerun from junior shortstop Scott Slappery in the top of the sixth to provide the insurance runs in the 3-0 win. Slappery had two of the team’s four hits and pitcher Tyler Carpenter fanned eight batters and allowed two hits in the shutout. Over the three games last week, the team went 16 straight innings without allowing a run. That streak ended Monday against Kell, but they still walked off the field with an 8-7 win. Milton is now 11-1 (6-0) and will try to stay atop the region standings against Centennial and Lassiter this week.
Roswell dropped its first game of the season to Pope, 12-2. The loss dropped the team to second place in the region, but they still are ranked No. 1 in the Class 5A coaches’ poll (gasports.com). The surprising loss was to the same Pope team that ended their unbeaten streak at last year. The loss is also a shock because the Hornets had won their last three games coming in by a combined 28-4. Those wins were 16-0 over Campbell, 3-2 over Wheeler and 9-2 over Walton.
In the Walton victory, Andrew Smith pitched another masterful game. He had eight strikeouts and allowed one run in five innings. Vinny Cottone had a single, a triple and two RBI to lead the team. Pitcher Zane Evans got the win against Wheeler, going six innings with seven strikeouts and one run allowed. It might have been a bad idea to take him out, because Wheeler scored their two runs against reliever Anthony Pettiti, but the Hornets were able to hang on and get the win, 3-2. The Hornets powered their way to a 16-0 win over Campbell. Tyler Green, Chris Wright, Ryan McDonald and Andre Gwyn all hit homeruns. Roswell will try to battle back in the region against Centennial and Alpharetta this week.
Lovett has won seven games in a row and rank eighth in the Class 2A coaches’ poll (gasports.com). The Lions had lost five of their first seven games, but have been on fire since region play has started. In the seven wins, the team has scored an incredible 94 runs while allowing an average of only 3.7 per game. They sit atop the Region 6, Class 2A standings at 4-0 and take on region opponents Blessed Trinity and Avondale this week.

TENNIS AND LACROSSE NOTES …
Alpharetta remained No. 1 (gasports.com) in boys’ tennis after winning the Buckhead Rotary Tournament. Zack Wagner and Henry Jang-Milsten both won in straight sets over their opponents from Milton. The tournament win put the team at 14-0 (9-0) on the season. The Raiders girls’ team was the first place winner in division B at the same tournament.
The Westminster boys and girls Lacrosse teams are ranked No. 1 (laxpower.com). Last week the boys (7-1) defeated Darlington, 12-6 and Lassiter, 15-11. The girls were victorious over Pace Academy, 18-2, Columbus, 18-0, Ravenwood, 11-8 and Lassiter, 15-5 to stay unbeaten at 11-0. The girls have allowed two or fewer goals in five games this season. They also rank first in the computer poll (laxpower.com).
The Fulton County Championships last weekend saw the Chattahoochee boys’ team and Westlake girls’ team win the overall team titles. The Hooch’s Dion Dupoux placed first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.31 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles at 38.38 seconds. He also helped the team to a third place finish in the 4×100 meter relay. Austin Ulich helped the Cougars with his first place finish in the 3200 meter run, with a time of 9:42.04. Ashley Johnson came in first in the discus throw for the Westlake girls. She also placed second in the shot put, earning 18 points for the team. The Lady Lions ‘A’ team came in first in the 4×100 meter relay. The ‘B’ team came in third to add six points to their top 101 overall team points.
