Friday Roundup: Thrashers fall, Lady Dawgs fell Tennessee

The Thrashers are approaching the Olympic break without a lot of momentum and last night’s outcome was certainly one that Atlanta would have wanted reversed. Against one of the worst teams in the league, the Thrashers allowed three power play goals and failed to net a single shot with the man-advantage in a 5-2 loss. The Carolina Hurricanes got two first period goals and allowed two more before Rich Peverley found the backside of the net in the third period. Colby Armstrong added another goal to make it 4-2 before Eric Staal completed a hat trick for the final margin of victory. The loss drops Atlanta into a tie for 10th in the Eastern Conference, three points out of 8th place for the playoffs.

The University of Georgia Bulldog women’s basketball team got a huge victory last night in Athens as the No.8 Lady Dawgs knocked off No.3 Tennessee 53-50. In a slugfest, Ashley Houts scored 12 points and Porsha Phillips tipped in a Houts miss with under one minute to play to give Georgia a late lead. Phillips then clinched the game with free throws. Georgia’s defense forced 23 Lady Vols turnovers en route to the win. It was Georgia’s first win against Tennessee in eight games.
