Friday Roundup: Cards drop game two, Rox tie Phils at 1-1

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright might just win the Cy Young this season, but he would likely trade that for the chance to finish off his masterpiece yesterday. Wainwright allowed just one run on three hits over eight innings before giving way to the bullpen for the ninth with the Cardinals leading 2-1. The Dodgers, down to their final out, hit a line drive to leftfielder Matt Holliday, who dropped the ball. Juan Pierre would score on a single then pinch-hitter Mark Loretta would deliver the game-ending RBI single to score Casey Blake and allow the Dodgers to win 3-2. The Dodgers took the series lead 2-0 and now head to St. Louis with a chance to sweep the Cardinals out of the playoffs. Holliday had previously given St. Louis a lift on the scoreboard with a second-inning solo home run.

It was a good day for LA as the Angels also brought home a big victory, beating the Boston Red Sox 5-0 in game one of the teams ALDS match-up. Torii Hunter crushed a three-run home run to break a scoreless tie in the fifth and starting pitcher John Lackey did the rest, tossing 7.1 innings of four hit ball. The Angles took a 1-0 lead in the series with game two tonight. The Yankees will face the Twins tonight in game two of their ALDS.

The Colorado Rockies reached the World Series in 2007 thanks to a hot streak and if Thursday is any indication, another streak could be coming. The Rox jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the defending World Series champion Philadelphia Philliesbefore holding on for a 5-4 win to tie the series at one game apiece. 2008 World Series MVP Cole Hamels gave up a two-run home run to Yorvit Torrealba, who had not gone deep since May 6. Hudson Street came on in the ninth for Colorado to record the final out with two on. The series now heads to Colorado.

The Atlanta Thrashers hit the road yesterday to welcome the St. Louis Blues back from a two-game set in Europe, and the Thrashers were rather rude to their hosts. Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice and rookie Evander Kane showed he might be “the real deal” with a goal as the Thrashers knocked off the Blues 4-2. Goalie Ondrej Pavelec made 29 saves for Atlanta as he faced 14 shots in the second period. Atlanta is now 2-0.

Finally it appears as though the SEC will have yet another chance to knock off a Big 10 opponent during bowl season, this time in Jacksonville. The Gator Bowl announced that beginning with the 2010 season, the Jacksonville-based bowl will pit an SEC team against a Big 10 school. The two conferences already do battle in the CapitalOne Bowl as well as the Outback bowl. The Gator Bowl previously had an agreement with the ACC, Big East and Notre Dame.
