Friday Roundup: Angels still alive, Softball tourney taking shape

The Angels exploded for four runs early in last night’s ALCS Game Five, and the Yankees thought they might have to go back to New York for a game six. After rallying for six runs in the seventh, perhaps the Yankees believed they’d be headed to yet another World Series. Maybe New York is, but the Angels forced a game six with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to win 7-6.Vlad Guerrero and Kendry Morales both drove in runs in the first and seventh innings while Torii Hunter drove in two and Bobby Abreu got the seventh inning rally started with an RBI-groundout. Mark Teixeira hit a three-run double to drive make the score 4-3 in the top of the seventh. Robinson Cano also contributed with an RBI triple.  In the first, the Angels score four runs before the Yankees were able to record an out as AJ Burnett was not effective early on. He pitched into the seventh, giving up a hit and a walk before being lifted. Game six in New York will feature Andy Pettitte once again trying to break John Smoltz’s mark for career postseason victories as he faces Angels starter Joe Saunders.

If the Falcons leave the Georgia Dome in the near future, it will not be for Doraville. The City Council rejected DeKalb County’s conceptual plan to build a new NFL Stadium for the Falcons at the site of the now-closed GM Plant. Doraville’s mayor said after the vote that the city was not in favor of putting a stadium up at the location. The Falcons have a lease to stay in the Georgia Dome through 2020.

Two-time defending state softball champion Buford advanced to the third round with a 2-1 victory over Union County yesterday in Columbus. Karly Fullem drove in both of the Wolves runs and Buford will face Cook today in the winners bracket. In Class AAAAA, Collins Hill saw a 2-1 lead melt away as the Lady Eagles gave up two solo home runs to lose 3-2.Houston County’s Erica Vasquez hit two home runs and HCHS added another homer for it’s total. Finally, the No.1 basketball recruit in the country last season John Wall may not get to suit up for the University of Kentucky as SEC Commissioner Mike Slive is looking into the guard’s eligibility. The SEC and UK have reportedly been investigating Wall after it was revealed that his AAU coach was a certified agent. The former coach claims that he forfeited his “agent status,” however the NCAA and/or the SEC and the school could force Wall to repay whatever benefits he received from the “agent” and could be suspended up to 10% of his team’s games.
