Gwinnett Braves on TV; Dogs sign kicker

The Gwinnett Braves will begin the 2009 season with Tommy Hanson and Jo-Jo Reyes on the roster but disappointed fans will still get the chance to watch Hanson. The G-Braves and CSS have partnered up and 25 games will be shown by the network. Josh Caray and former Brave Brian Jordan will call the games; the first game will be a home contest April 23 against Charlotte. Twenty of the games will be home games it has been announced.

The Georgia Bulldog football team will have a kicking competition this spring after head coach Mark Richt offered a scholarship to junior college kicker Brandon Bogotay Thursday. The San Diego native kicked for Grossmont College last season and after signing with Georgia will have three years of eligibility at UGA.  Last season true freshman Blair Walsh handled placekicking and kickoff duties and Bogotay is expected to be a kickoff specialist. Walsh booted eight of 75 kickoffs out of bounds last season.

With the NFL draft getting closer and closer, ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. has reshuffled his board and several local players have be ranked on Kiper’s Big Board. While Georgia QB Matthew Stafford remains Kiper’s third best player, RB Knowshon Moreno has improved according to Kiper and now checks in as Kiper’s No. 13 player available. Georgia Tech DE Michael Johnson was not ranked on Kiper’s Big Board but had been several weeks ago.

Finally, Sweet 16 action got underway last night and UCONN, Pittsburgh, Missouri and Villanova were the big winners. The Memphis Tigers lost to Missouri and it ended the collegiate career of Lithonia-native Robert Dozier. The loss was compounded by a recent family tragedy where the Dozier family lost its house in a fire. Dozier has been projected to be a late first-round pick in the upcoming NBA draft.
