FRIDAY BLOG: Second round brings more great matchups in H.S. football playoffs

It was a wild first round of the state playoffs as there were upsets, overtime endings, and come from behind victories. Now it’s down to 16 teams in each classification as the second round of the playoffs get underway tonight. Here’s a look at some of tonight’s top games:

Lowndes vs. Camden County – This is not only the biggest second round game of the night, this could be the biggest second round game in state playoff history as both teams have won five out of the last six AAAAA championships. The last two times these teams have met have been in the state semifinals and Lowndes won both contests 10-0 in 2007 and 30-0 in 2004. It should be a high scoring affair as both teams average over 40 points-per-game.

Colquitt County vs. Stephenson – Colquitt County is one of the best stories so far this year as head coach Rush Propst has turned the program around. Though, they are coming off a 10-0 win against Westlake last week which was their lowest point total of the season. The Packers will have to play better offensively if they want to beat Stephenson who are the Region 2-AAAAA champions and are 11-0. They are led by Kentucky commit Raymond Sanders who had 172 yards rushing in the 44-0 win over Bradwell Institute. You can watch the game live on www.gpb.org/football /watch.

Tucker vs. Sandy Creek – Tucker is the defending AAAA champions and are coming off a 35-13 win over Dalton. Devin Scott will look to have another big game as he rushed for 91 yards and three touchdowns in the win last week. Sandy Creek are the No. 1 seed in Region 5 and they have won 10 games for the fourth time in seven season. They are led by Rajion Neal who scored two touchdowns in the 37-19 win over Loganville last week.

Flowery Branch vs. Grady – The Falcons are the 2008 state runner up and are looking to make another run at the Georgia Dome. They are a No. 4 seed which they are only one three No. 4 seeds to win their first round game. They have the second best offense in AAA, averaging nearly 42 points-per-game, but they give up almost 25 points-per-game and that has hurt the Falcons in a couple of key games. They face a Grady team that Grady team that is 10-1 for they with their only loss coming against St. Pius X. They are coming off a thrilling 26-21 win over Hart County where Hart County fumbled out of the end zone at the Grady 1-yard line at the end of the game.
