Friday basketball recaps

Let’s take a glance at the results from Friday’s basketball games from around the state.

For the girls, in Class AAAAAAA, Duluth defeated North Gwinnett 40-37 in a Region 6 matchup. Duluth trailed 17-14 after the first quarter and, despite a dismal second quarter, the Wildcats trailed 19-18 at the half. The Wildcats took the lead with an 11-7 effort in the third frame before holding on to win. In a Class AAAAAA Region 4 game, Roswell carried its 17-9 first quarter lead to a 66-52 victory. The Hornets pieced together a 23-10 run in the third quarter and held on through Roswell’s 20-15 effort in the final frame. In a Class AAAAAA Region 7 game, Centennial defeated Cambridge 46-31 after taking a 13-8 to open the game. The Knights pushed the lead to 25-18 at the break and expanded the lead with a 14-3 run in the third quarter. Starr’s Mill won a Class AAAAA Region 3 game against crosstown rival McIntosh 44-41 after being down 14-8 entering the second quarter. Starr’s Mill’s 16-4 run in the final frame proved to be the difference after it trailed 20-15 at the break and 37-28 entering the fourth quarter. Hampton won a Class AAAA Region 4 game against Woodward Academy 50-48. Hampton took a 12-10 lead after the first quarter and a 23-21 lead at the break. After three quarters, Woodward led 35-33 and with 4:55 left in the game, Hampton stretched the lead to 44-40. With 2:34 left, Woodward climbed within three points (48-45) and with 1:14 left, Hampton was nursing a 49-48 lead before its final free throw. In Class AAA, Dawson County won convincingly over Denmark 84-20. Kaylee Sticker led with 22 points. Maddie Anglin and Ella Siuta each scored 16 points. Mariah Benson added nine points. Shyla Sheffield scored six points and Sophia D’Oliviera, Marlie Townley and Anna Lowe each scored four points. In another Class AAA game, Morgan County won a Region 8 matchup against East Jackson 77-40. Miranda Powell scored 18 points. NeShay Cobb scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds. Rachel Swafford notched two points and Bella Henson scored one point. In Class A-Private, Athens Academy won against George Walton Academy (50-34) behind a 21-point effort from Ali Rumpel, who added with 13 rebounds. Jaila Salley scored eight points with seven rebounds and four assists. Betul Arpinar and Greer Moseley each scored seven points.

For the boys, McIntosh’s Keenan Brown helped lead the Chiefs with a flawless shooting performance which allowed McIntosh to rout its Class AAAAA Region 3 rival Starr’s Mill 85-61. Brown, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, shot 100 percent from the floor (8-for-8 from the field and 7-of-7 from beyond the arc). Naj Ashley-Emory, a 6-2 junior shooting guard, added 31 points. Bruce Carpenter, a 6-2 senior guard, scored 20 points. In Class AAAAA’s Region 7, Paulding County defeated Villa Rica 64-62 on the road. Jervon Morris scored 17 points. John Cook added 14 points with 8 rebounds. Corleone Thomas chipped in 11 points. Keon Sedgwick and Jamal McIver each scored nine points. In a Class AAAA Region 4 game, Woodward defeated Hampton 58-44. Walker Kessler added 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks. Jacorrei Turner helped with 13 points and four rebounds. Kevin Powell scored eight points with seven assists and five steals. Logan Stephens grabbed 10 rebounds and made three assists. In Class AAAA’s Region 7, Blessed Trinity outclassed Flowery Branch 83-38, led by senior guard Jack Stephans’s 29-point effort. Sophomore guard Jax Bouknight scored 13 points and junior forward James Bryant added 10 points. In a Class A-Private game, St. Francis defeated Whitefield Academy 61-35. Down Odom led with 21 points, five rebounds, eight assists and two steals. Chase Ellis scored 13 points and had eight rebounds. C.J. Riley added nine points with two rebounds and three assists. Jusaun Holt scored six points and made seven rebounds.
