Four elite programs leading Region 2-2A into the playoffs

Region 2-2A is looking to makes its league known in the the Class 2A boys’ soccer playoffs. The region is the only one in the class with four ranked teams, and one of only two with more than one ranked team. Four of those teams have won 10 games, two are ranked in the top five, and two others are ranked in the top 10.

Appling County is the top-ranked team in the region and the one that won the regular season region title. The Pirates went 11-4 on the season and 4-1 in region play, only losing to Tattnall County 6-5 on April 7. They were able to defeat both of the other top-four teams in the region, beating Crisp County 3-2 and Pierce County 2-1, giving them the regular season region title. However, a loss to Tattnall County in the region tournament lost the pirates the region title. Whoever draws them in the first round will face an extremely tough opponent, a team that is as good as, if not better than, most one-seeds.

The second-highest ranked team, Tattnall County, has dominated its past nine games. In that span, the team has won nine straight. However, a slow start to the season saw them begin 1-3, including losses to Crisp County and Pierce County. Since then, they have not lost a game, including two wins over Appling County and a revenge victory against Crisp County, ultimately winning the region title. They enter the playoffs on a hot streak that rivals any team in the state. Anyone hoping to defeat them will face an immensely talented, battle-tested squad.

Pierce County is the third-ranked team in the region. The Bears started the season strong, winning seven of their first eight games. They had a tough end to the regular season, losing three of their past five games and three of their last four region games. However, all three of those losses came against two of the other top-four teams. The team will enter the playoffs with a strong record and the ability to beat anyone, as shown by their win over Tattnall County.

Crisp County is the final ranked team in the region. The Cougars, much like Tattnall County, have been strong down the stretch, winning six of their last seven games. Their only loss in that span came against Tattnall County in the region championship. The team showed how well they could play during that stretch, with two wins over Pierce County. The team they face in the playoffs will definitely have a tough matchup on their hands. The Cougars will enter the postseason with a lot of confidence due to their recent success.
