The West Forsyth Gymnastics team had an outstanding showing at the state meet led by their lone competitor freshman Marissa Villarreal. A small team, which had been hurt by injury in the recent weeks, the Lady Wolverines found quite a bit of success in their first season capped off by a strong effort by Villarreal in the vault over the weekend. Placing ninth overall, with two great jumps, she earned a combined score of 9.175.
West Forsyth gymnastics looks forward to a bright future according to head coach Ashley Austin.
"Being a first year team, I only expect our talent and energy going up from here," remarked Austin. "We have a taste of what GHSA gymnastics competition is like now, and we will know how to change our practices and performances to better reflect how we need to compete in the upcoming season. There will be changes throughout the program to improve and we hope to add at least five new gymnasts next year to our list of talent."
ON THE COURTS …
Upon entering the second round of the state playoffs, the Lambert Boys tennis team knew they might have the most dangerous team on their side of the bracket in Riverwood. In the end, the run came to an end for the Longhorns as they fell to the Raiders, 3-2. All is not lost on head coach Dan Levi as it was a highly successful inaugural season for the new school which came in with high expectations on the court.
"As a first year team we came into the season with a little chip on our shoulders knowing that we were pretty good," Levi said. "We felt that we were the team to beat and we knew we had to prove it every week. Our early- and late-season success can be attributed to the player’s dedication to improving their skills and being the best that they can be. This is one of the finest groups of young men I have ever had the privilege of coaching."
Returning all seven starters next year, Lambert clearly has the experience to be a highly competitive team in 2011.
The Lambert girls tennis team beat Johns Creek for the second time this season putting them one win shy of reaching the state semifinals. The Lady Longhorns won 3-1 with wins from Karlee Bryde at No. 1 singles (1-6, 6-3, 6-4), Kealee Heffner at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-0), and Kate Trinkle and Lauren Ewers (6-3, 7-6, 7-3) at No. 2 doubles.
Johns Creek was a familiar opponent for Lambert as the two teams met in the first match of the season, a 5-0 Lady Longhorn victory. The West Forsyth girls team also advanced to the quarterfinals with a narrow 3-2 victory over Oconee. Weather delayed both teams’ quarterfinals matches. If the two squads advance, Lambert would face Spalding and West would draw Woodward.
SOCCER, TRACK AND LACROSSE NEWS …
The Creekview girls soccer team got off on the right foot in the first round of state playoffs winning 6-1 at home over Cartersville. The one-sided victory only reiterated the fact that the Lady Grizzlies are one of the teams to beat in Class 3A competition. Cori Dulmage led the team scoring an impressive four first half goals.
Several athletes have begun their attempts at state championships in track and field after qualifying in the Class 5A, Region 5 meet. Etowah’s Leah Hixon will make her second straight appearance at state after winning the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, four inches. Etowah teammate, Emily McNutt will be competing in the state meet as well after winning the 3200-meter race in a time of 11:51.59. Cherokee’s Mattie Hester also qualified for the meet after finishing second in the shot put with a throw of 105 feet, 2 inches.
The Woodstock boys and girls lacrosse teams both qualified for the state tournament with key late-season wins. Like so many teams, Woodstock really benefited from new rules this year governing Georgia high school lacrosse. With more teams making the postseason, the boys team finished as the fourth seed and the girls finished as the third seed in Class 5A, Area 2 as the top four teams from each area qualify for the postseason. The boys defeated Etowah 11-10 in a late-season showdown that played a pivotal role in building momentum towards the playoffs. John Domer scored the go-ahead goal in that game with two minutes left, while Scott Carter paced the team with six goals. Both teams are making their first playoff appearances.
