Former Rabun County Wildcat, Charlie Woerner, signs a three-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons

Rabun County High School’s own, Charlie Woerner, has signed a three-year, $12 million deal with the Atlanta Falcons after spending four seasons in San Francisco with the 49ers.

Woerner has been in San Francisco since 2020 since the 49ers drafted him in the sixth round with the 190th-pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The former Rabun County Wildcat signed to Atlanta as a free agent yesterday, as the free agent negotiation period began on Monday allowing players to sign new contracts.

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound tight end from Tiger, GA was a four star prospect among major recruiting platforms coming out of high school. He was a top-15 prospect in the state of Georgia in his recruiting cycle according to 247Sports and accumulated numerous awards during his high school days.

For his performance in high school, Woerner was named first team All-State at tight end and also won Class 2A Defensive Player of the Year after his work on both sides of the ball for the Wildcats. Woerner played four seasons of varsity football at Rabun County and was four yards shy of eclipsing 3,000 receiving yards and 150 receptions during his Wildcat-career. In his senior season, he caught 57 passes and totaled 16 touchdowns in his final season of high school football.

After Rabun County, Woerner committed to continue his football career at the University of Georgia where he saw playing time immediately. The tight end saw action in 12 games his freshman season and it only increased the further he got into college. From his sophomore to senior season, he played in all 14 games each season and made contributions to the Bulldog offense that didn’t always show up on the stat sheet but made an impact on the game, such as setting up his teammates with blocks and doing his job from the tight end position.

Woerner is following the path members of his family took such as his uncle, Scott Woerner, who played on the UGA national championship team in 1980 and was drafted in the third round of the 1981 Draft to Charlie’s current team— the Atlanta Falcons.

As a 49er, Woerner made numerous playoff appearances including a Super Bowl appearance last season as San Francisco lost to Patrick Mahomes in the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime. He was a reliable tight end in the bay area, backing up All-Pro tight end George Kittle, creating an elite tight end blocking duo.

Now back home in Georgia, Woerner will get the chance to play for his hometown team in the Atlanta Falcons. The tight end will look to make an immediate impact in a new Falcons offense headlined by young weapons across the board, and free agent quarterback signee, Kirk Cousins as the teams signed him for four years on Monday.
