It was a full weekend for former Newton High School and current San Antonio Spurs guard, Stephon Castle, in the 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend in the Bay Area.
In his first All-Star weekend of his career, Castle put on a full display competing in all three days of the weekend’s events including the Rising Stars Challenge, the Slam Dunk Contest as well as the NBA All-Star Game with his Rising Stars teammates.
The rookie was the first player since former Los Angeles Clippers’ high-flyer Blake Griffin to compete in all days of the NBA All-Star Weekend.
While competing in the weekend’s events, Castle took home Most Valuable Player honors in Friday’s Rising Stars Challenge, leading his team to make an appearance with the NBA All-Stars on Sunday evening. Castle scored 18 points and added seven rebounds and six assists in Friday’s game.
In between the Rising Stars Challenge and the NBA All-Star Game, Castle competed in the Slam Dunk Contest during Saturday nights events where he finished in second place, losing to now three-time Slam Dunk Contest champion, Mac McClung.
Castle’s performance throughout the weekend turned many heads as he showed the rest of the league his vast skill-set.
“I enjoyed watching Stephon Castle,” said fellow Atlanta-native and Minnesota Timberwolves superstar, Anthony Edwards to Nate Ryan of KENS 5. “He’s from Atlanta, GA. Roots. Home roots. And I like the way he plays, I like the excitement he brings. His potential is scary.”
Castle has been involved in a number of roles in his short time in San Antonio whether it has been backing up Chris Paul and newly-acquired De’Aaron Fox off the bench or even entering the starting lineup which he has done so 29 times this season.
The rookie is averaging close to 13 points per game to go along with four assists and three rebounds and has shot up the Rookie of the Year ladder recently after the events throughout the NBA All-Star Weekend.
At 6-foot-6, Castle has the build of a modern NBA guard who can do a multitude of things on the court from handling the ball, getting downhill to the rim, distributing and playing lockdown defense on the other end of the court.
Castle, a Covington-native, played his high school basketball at Newton High School where he averaged over 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists per game on the offensive end while adding three steals and two blocks to his stat line as well, creating havoc for teams trying to run their offense.
At just 20 years-old, Castle has yet to scratch the surface of his capabilities. With the young roster that the San Antonio Spurs have, expect Castle to continue improving and having more and more success in his professional basketball career.
