Former Cedartown head coach Jamie Abrams remembers hearing about Bowdon football as a kid. He grew up just over the Alabama state line and Bowdon is not far from it. He remembers stories of his grandfather’s glory days playing for Bowdon.
“I always went to Bowdon games growing up because we lived right across the state line in Alabama,” said Abrams. “My grandfather played there in the 1920′s and my mom graduated from Bowdon, so I have roots there.”
And now Abrams will help build Bowdon’s defensive wall as the program’s new defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Red Devils. According toe Abrams, he’s ready to go to work for head coach Rich Fendley Jr.
“Coach Fendley and I go way back and have always communicated,” said Abrams.
The Red Devils have won at least 13 games in the last three seasons, compiling a total record of 40-5 in the last three years. Abrams will be taking over a Bowdon defense that allowed just around 17 points per game over its 15-game season a year ago.
He is coming off of a five-year stint with the Bulldogs in Cedartown, compiling a 50-12 record during his time with the school before he was let go by the school after the season. As a head football coach in the state, he has compiled a record of 65-19-1 and has won three region titles during his time leading programs around the state of Georgia.
In his time with the school, Abrams made the postseason in all five seasons including a state championship appearance in 2022 where his Bulldogs were defeated by one point to Benedictine, 14-13.
A year ago, Abrams led a Cedartown defense that allowed under 14 points per game, headlined by Georgia Tech freshman defensive back, Tae Harris, Kentucky-commit defensive back Demarcus Gardner as well as defensive lineman and Tuskegee defensive linemen, Jakoby Diamond. Last season ultimately ended in a first round upset for the Bulldogs, losing to Cambridge 51-44.
Is Bowdon eyeing a third consecutive title?
“When you look at what (Fendley) has done there and having a chance to get close to home, it was a no-brainer,” Abrams said.
