Football team to open region play against Avondale

The football team came back energized on Friday night after enjoying a bye week. The team faced off against Washington-Wilkes and the game was rarely in doubt after the opening kickoff, ending in a 33-7 rout. Sam Burkhalter led the way with three touchdown runs of 40, 2 and 18 yards. For the night, Burkhalter finished with 137 yards rushing on 24 carries. Quarterback Kohl Hegetschweiler threw for 156 yards on 14 attempts with two touchdown passes to Kennan Gomez. The team will open region play at Avondale this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. … The volleyball team won the Collins Hill Classic Tournament by defeating Parkview and was led by tournament MVP Meghan Morillo. She finished the tournament with 34 kills and a team-high 18 aces. … The softball team (12-9) defeated Avondale 22-0 last Thursday after losing to Buford 4-0 on Tuesday. The team travels to Greater Atlanta Christian this Thursday before taking on Pope on Monday. The match against Pope is the last match prior to the region playoffs, which start on Oct. 1.
