Flyers continue dominance over Thrashers

Not even a five-game winning streak and a feuding Philadelphia squad was enough to end the Thrashers’ long losing streak to the Flyers on Sunday night.

Atlanta came into Sunday’s contest losers of the last 11 games against Philadelphia, but on a franchise-high five-game win streak in the regular season. It would be 12 in a row to the Flyers, as the Thrashers fell 4-3.

It took Atlanta a while to wake up, putting up only 11 shots during the first two periods, while Philadelphia threw 28 at Johan Hedberg. Hedberg did his best to keep the Thrashers in the game by only allowing three goals in the first 40 minutes.

Philadelphia scored twice in the first, getting goals from Simon Gagne and Mike Knuble in the first and last minutes of the first period, respectively.

Atlanta pulled within one when Erik Christensen scored his first of the year a quarter of the way through the middle frame. The Flyers would then extend their lead back to two when Kimmo Timonen scored on a Philadelphia power play, making the score 3-1 going into the third.

Finally in the third period Atlanta found its offense, as Brian Little and Slava Kozlov scored to tie the game at three.

In the end, however, the Flyers’ hex on the Thrashers prevailed as Joffrey Lupul got plenty of time to find an open spot between Hedberg and the net, giving the Flyers a 4-3 victory.

The Thrashers will next hit the ice on Thursday when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7 p.m.
