The Starr’s Mill dance team closed out Saturday’s 84-team lineup with a championship-clinching Jazz routine to win this year’s Class 4A-5A state title and secure the program’s fifth-straight state title. Akins Arena at the Classic Center in Athens, Ga. hosted the event for the first time and the sport celebrated its fifth year as a GHSA sanctioned sport. The Panthers—who are now a perfect five-of-five in state titles—won last year’s crown with a Pom routine in the old Class 3A-4A and continued their dynasty on Saturday in a new classification with a different genre to hold off two-time reigning Class 5A-6A state champion and rival McIntosh.
In Class 6A, Peachtree Ridge returned to the top of Georgia’s highest classification with a Hip Hop routine—improving upon last year’s third-place finish and winning the program’s second state title in the past three years. Reclassification sent Starr’s Mill up from Class 3A-4A last year to the new Class 4A-5A and as a result Class 2A-3A was the only classification this year that did not have a defending state champion within it. Heritage-Catoosa capitalized and won its first-ever state title with its Hip Hop routine after finishing state runner-up last year to the Panthers.
Stilwell Arts continued its dominance by winning its fourth-straight state title and the Stallions did it with a Jazz routine—besting the field of 14 Class A teams competing in this year’s championships.
