Ten teams descended upon the Georgia Dome over the weekend for five championship games, and the cream rose to the top as the GHSA football championships were decided. Grayson, ranked as high as No. 5 in recent national polls, defeated Walton in the Class AAAAA title game, and those two occupy the top spots in the final poll. Colquitt County and Camden County showed enough to snag the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in the highest classification. Lassiter’s magical run moved the Trojans to No. 5 in the final poll. In AAAA, Lovejoy’s defense was outmatched by Tucker’s offense in the finals, and the Tigers earned the title of undefeated champions. Sandy Creek saw its 41-game winning streak snapped by Gainesville, but a Burke County victory over Peach County moved the Bears into the top spot in AAA. For the first time in five years, Buford is not the top team in AA as Calhoun needed overtime but still defeated the Wolves for the title. Finally Savannah Christian proved that the third time is the charm in Class A after the Raiders dispatched the War Eagles 20-3 to win the 2011 crown. ELCA finished No. 3 in Class A.
