Final baseball rankings: Pope, Tattnall Square only pre-playoff No. 1s to win titles

Parkview lifted its seventh trophy last Thursday at home.

Parkview won its seventh state title with a sweep over Mill Creek in Class AAAAAAA. The other two semifinalists, Woodstock and Brookwood, finish third and fourth, respectively, and North Paulding, which reached the quarterfinals and played two close games with Mill Creek, finishes fifth. Etowah surged into the Top 10 despite an overall losing record after reaching the quarters.

Pope won its second-consecutive Class AAAAAA title with a three-game series win over Allatoona. River Ridge fell to Pope for the second-straight year in the semis and finishes third, while Alpharetta came from unranked to make the semis on the other side and finish 20-20. Valdosta (No. 7) and Grovetown (No. 8) also finish in the Top 10 after entering the postseason unranked, and Lee County (No. 9) and Winder-Barrow (No. 10) hold on in the rankings after second-round exits.

In Class AAAAA, Loganville was another repeat winner with a sweep over Buford in the finals. Flowery Branch moves from unranked to No. 4 after making the semifinals and losing two closely contested games against Buford, and Starr’s Mill moves from No. 6 before the playoffs to No. 3 after its semifinals appearance. Pre-playoff No. 1 Wayne County drops to No. 8 after a second-round loss to No. 6 Ola.

Jefferson capped off an incredible postseason run, surviving Game 3s against pre-playoff No. 1 Blessed Trinity in the semis and No. 2 Cartersville in the championship to take the title; the Dragons entered the playoffs at No. 6. Preseason favorite Blessed Trinity finishes at No. 3, and Heritage-Ringgold finishes at No. 4. West Laurens (No. 7) and Spalding (No. 9) started the playoffs outside of the Top 10 but made the quarterfinals.

The Class AAA season ended with two traditional rivals in the championship series, and this time Lovett got the upper hand with a three-game series victory after the teams split in the regular season. Pre-playoff No. 1 Ringgold was edged by Westminster in the semis and finishes at No. 3, while Morgan County moves up one spot to No. 4 after its semis appearance. Southeast Bulloch, previously unranked, finishes No. 7.

Class AA experienced a lot of movement from the pre-playoff poll, as Benedictine wins the championship after going into the postseason ranked fifth. Berrien, the previous No. 10, finishes as runner-up. No. 5 Thomasville, the previous No. 1, fell to No. 3 Callaway, which stayed at that ranking after taking Benedictine to three games in the semis.

Gordon Lee captured the Class A-Public title after a late swoon in the regular season moved it down to fourth in the rankings. Bowdon finishes No. 2 after knocking off No. 7 Johnson County and the top-rated team in the field, Schley County before falling to Gordon Lee in the semis. The top four also includes runner-up Telfair County (No. 3) and its semifinalist opponent Irwin County (No. 4).

Tattnall Square entered the playoffs as the No. 1 team in the poll but entered postseason play as the No. 3 team in the GHSA’s ratings. The Trojans went undefeated in the playoffs and dispatched upstart Prince Avenue in the finals; Prince Avenue finishes second after being unranked in the Week 10 poll. Semifinalists Holy Innocents’ and First Presbyterian Day round out the top four.
