Falcons’ Jerry out for year, former Bulldog Walker to start MMA career and more

The Falcons will be without first round pick Peria Jerry for the rest of the season after the defensive tackle suffered a knee injury during the fourth quarter of yesterday’s 28-20 win over the Carolina Panthers. Mike Smith made the announcement this afternoon

and also noted that former Georgia Tech DT Vance Walker will be moved onto the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

Heisman winner and University of Georgia legend Herschel Walker is starting a new career in MMA. The former running back has signed a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce and Walker hopes to get into the ring by 2010. Walker has played in the USFL and the NFL as well as dabbled in bobsledding and now Walker is going to enter the mixed martial arts world at the age of 47. The Georgia legend holds a fifth degree black belt in tae kwon do.

After appearing on CBS five times last season, the University of Georgia Bulldogs will make its season debut on the Eyeball network October 3 against LSU. The nationally televised game will begin at 3:30 p.m. The Dawgs will play this weekend on ESPNU, its third straight night game on the ESPN networks after opening the season on ABC. Also, Joe Cox one day after being named the Walter Camp Foundation’s offensive player of the week, the Georgia quarterback was named today as SEC offensive player of the week. Cox was 18-26 for 375 and 5 TDs.
