FALCONS FLIGHT: Falcons sign Konz, three other draft picks

The Falcons held their rookie camp this weekend and ended the session on a high note, as they signed four of their six members of the draft class including center Petern Konz, fullback Bradie Ewing, safety Charles Mitchell and defensive tackle Travian Robertson.

Konz who was, projected to be a first round pick, was selected by the Falcons 55th overall and the AJC reported that the deal he signed is a four-year $3.58 million deal with a $1.05 million signing bonus.

“I thought Peter did a nice job,” Falcons head coach Mike Smith said after the first rookie minicamp practice on Friday. Of course, Peter is being cross trained at two positions. He spent most of his day at the guard position, but he did also take some snaps. I think it’s obvious, he’s a big strong guy.”

Ewing, who was Konz’s teammate at Wisconsin was the Falcons fifth round selection and has a chance to take Ovie Mughelli’s place at fullback. Mughelli, who suffered a season ending knee injury last October, was recently released by the Falcons because he was slated to get $3 million.

“When you have to make decisions on your roster they are always tough,” Smith said talking about releasing Mughelli. “Especially with a guy that has contributed and helped us have the success that we’ve had. It was an organizational decision and we wish Ovie the best. We’ve got to move on.”

Mitchell was the Falcons sixth round pick. Because of depth issues, Mitchell should be playing right behind William Moore and see a lot of action on special teams. Last year when Mitchell was at Mississippi State, he tallied 95 tackles while notching three tackles for loss, six passes defended and one forced fumble.

Robertson was the Falcons seventh round pick and will likely be the fifth defensive tackle on the depth chart. Last year at South Carolina, Robertson had 45 tackles, two sacks and eight tackles for loss.

With the four draftees signed that leaves only offensive tackle Lamar Holmes and defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi. Holmes did not participate in the rookie minicamp because he was nursing a left foot injury. The Falcons hope to have both players signed by Monday.

With rookie minicamp done, the Falcons will have Organized Team Activities on May 29, June 6 and June 13. They will then have a full team minicamp from June 19-21 and will then hold training camp the last week in July.
