Deke Cooper is a name that could heat up this spring and summer on the recruiting trail. The AAU circuit will begin soon and Cooper will be running with Atlanta Xpress. He is fresh off a dominant season for Woodward Academy leading the War Eagles to a 26-6 record, region championship, and semifinal finish in 2023.
Cooper averaged 14.8 points per game, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.5 steals. He led the team in scoring and rebounding this season. He finished the season scoring in double-figures in five of the final six games. Defensive is an area where he makes his mark. Cooper can guard multiple positions and is a great on-ball defender capable of causing disruption and easy transition buckets for his teammates.
His stellar performance this season saw him make the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association 6A all-state team. Cooper also surpassed 1,000 career points and was named 6A all-region this season. He stands at 6’6 185 pounds and is a strong assertive guard offensively.
One of the best parts of his game is his ability to create off the bounce. Cooper is great at probing into the lane and finishing through traffic and makes layups look routine and easy. He also possesses a polished mid-range game. Once he gets to his spots, he is difficult to contain and slow down.
Cooper has a smooth jumper and is efficient with his touches. He shot his best percentage from the field this season in his prep career at 48%. He has improved his scoring average every year he’s been a starter and has averaged double-figures in every season he has played for the War Eagles.
Cooper recently participated in the GBCA Coaches All-Star game this past weekend at Gateway Arena, home of the College Park Skyhawks. Cooper currently holds offers from Georgia State, Tulane, Tennessee Tech, and Kennesaw State. He picked up the Georgia State offer this past Sunday. He has a bright future and has proved he could be a prolific scorer on the next level.
