Antonio Wimbush has been a major factor in Camden County’s success this year by playing both sides of the ball extremely well. He has been a consistent running back during his career and averages more than five yards per carry. Wimbush is not one dimensional, though, as he plays on offense, defense and special teams.
“I play what we call the pony position. It’s kind of like a linebacker or a defensive end,” Wimbush explained. His versatility is a weapon that Camden County coaches are lucky to have. Wimbush is comfortable standing up as a linebacker or putting his hand down and rushing the passer as a defensive end. Not many players play as well as he has at one of these positions, let alone two.
In his first two years as a running back for the Wildcats, he totaled nearly 1,000 yards with 16 touchdowns on more than 5.5 yards-per carry. His play on the defensive end is just as impressive. When his team needed him to step up on defense, he took the responsibility seriously and has already made 73 tackles, eight sacks, one interception and two fumble recoveries for the Cats’ defense.
On special teams, Wimbush has totaled 562 yards on kickoff and punt returns on 31 tries. His incredible numbers and abilities have already been noticed by Marshall, Vanderbilt, Georgia, Mississippi State and Missouri. One of the most impressive numbers Wimbush has is his 3.8 GPA that he works hard to maintain.
On top of all the football and schoolwork, he also plays baseball well. Wimbush has developed a love for baseball like the one he has for football, and he wants to help younger kids realize how great an impact sports can have on a person’s life.
“Over the summer I help volunteer with a coach that did a little softball camp,” Wimbush said. “I’m really just helping him work in the outfield and kind of doing drills.”
Wimbush is one of the most well-rounded student athletes in the state of Georgia. He works just as hard in the classroom as he does in the gym or on the football field. His work ethic and drive to be the best should earn him a spot on a D-I roster.
