When searching for the perfect sports bar, the goal is to find a place that has what you expect as well as a little something extra. With sports, and the bars in which we choose to view them, some things just make sense. For example, no one wants to watch a Cowboys game with a stand-up comedian performing in the background while ice cream is dripping down their hands; meanwhile, wings, beer and football are a threesome made in heaven.
In Buckhead, Pharr Road is home to a sports bar with that little something extra, as Elbow Room provides sports, drinks, a welcoming atmosphere and its own special focus: without question the best New York-style pizza in all of Atlanta. And when asked what separates his establishment from others like it, owner Joe Bonanno echoes a similar sentiment.
“First and foremost, we’re a sports bar/pizzeria,” he said. “We serve hand-tossed, New York style pizza. Everything is made from scratch: our dough and our sauce are made here and even the bread for our sandwiches is homemade. People are actually surprised when they come into our pub and get great pizza.”
Since taking over Elbow Room in 1999, Bonanno has built a bar perfect for everyone as well as one that is special to many. He estimates that Elbow Room has about 150 “regulars,” but quickly dismisses any notion of exclusivity.
“If you come in here once, for the most part you will come here again … We go out of our way to make sure everyone feels welcomed.”
Finally, in addition to the comfort, pizza and good company found at Elbow Room, the bar also caters well to sports fans, as its dartboard, pool table and 15 TVs guarantee entertainment for all. And, best yet, the perfect sports pub has plans to take things to a new level come January, when live musical acts will be featured on Friday and Saturday nights.
