Early upsets seen in the 2015 region tournaments

With state playoff berths on the line, region tournament play is not for the faint of heart. Teams are willing to do whatever it takes – scrap, claw, and will their way to victory and to leave their mark in school history. With the first round and even second round in some regions completed, let’s take a look at some lower seeds that were able to knock off the assumed favorites.

Class AAAAAA

Class AAAAAA’s only major upset was in boys action with #10 Habersham Central (7-18, 1-17) toppling #7 South Forsyth (8-17, 7-11), 44-34. The Raiders will now meet #2 Lambert tonight at 7 p.m.

Class AAAAA

Region play started early in 6-AAAAA as the first games began on Saturday, and boy did they start with a bang. #7 Dunwoody (8-19, 1-13) was able to deny #3 Southwest DeKalb (18-8, 9-5) another trip to the state playoffs. The Wildcats pulled out a 45-43 win before being eliminated by #2 Mays, 54-36. On the girls’ side, #6 MLK (2-19, 1-10) upset #3 Carver-Atlanta (11-15, 3-6) 42-39. MLK will have a chance to keep dancing as they play #2 Stephenson today.

#4 Academy of Richmond girls (16-10, 3-7) upended #1 Northside-WR (11-11, 5-1) in Region 2, 57-52. Region 3 also saw some girls shakeup. #9 Richmond Hill (8-18, 1-12) knocked off #4 Glynn Academy (14-11, 8-5), 45-41. Glynn Academy had beaten the Wildcats by 16 in their only previous meeting this season.

In boys’ play, Region 4’s #6 Starr’s Mill (11-15, 6-12) defeated #3 Woodland-Stockbridge (15-11, 10-7), 73-70. #8 Chapel Hill (9-16, 6-12) snuck past #5 Hiram (11-14, 9-9), 52-43 in Region 5. The final upset in AAAAA came in Region 7. #6 Forsyth Central (9-19, 3-9) edged #3 Sequoyah (14-12, 6-6), 71-59.

Class AAAA

In the competitive Region 6, #5 Grady (13-13, 9-9) took down #4 Stone Mountain (17-9, 12-6), 52-40 in boys play. Grady now advances on to face #1 Lithonia on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.

Class AAA

Region 4 saw the #6 Blessed Trinity Lady Titans (7-19, 2-10) clip the #3 North Clayton Eagles (7-14, 6-4), 55-40. Though North Clayton was the higher seed, the outcome may not have been a surprise as Blessed Trinity defeated the Eagles by 23 in their first meeting.

Class AA

#6 Armuchee (10-15, 2-10) punched its ticket to state for the first time in school history as they upset #3 Chattooga (17-6, 8-4), 66-64 in Region 7 boys action. The Tribe will now try to improve upon their seeding for state as they meet #2 Coosa Friday night at 7 p.m.

Class A

Region 2 witnessed #8 Lanier County (6-22, 4-12) slip past #5 Echols County (9-14, 8-8), 41-34. The Lady Bulldogs will now face #4 Charlton County today at 4 p.m.
