This year, Douglass will be seeking its first winning season under head coach Dallas Allen, who is entering his second season with the Astros. Douglass has a rich history of excellence and tradition that includes a streak of seven consecutive winning seasons in the 1990s, but fell short of following this of success last year by going 0-10.
“At Douglass High School we are currently trying to build on a stature of tradition, and [as a program we are] full of athletes that are used to playing very hard as a whole,” said Allen. “Right now we are working real hard.”
Heading into the season, the Astros currently stand as a fairly young team; they only have four starters returning on offense and three on defense. Some key players returning for the Astros are LB Cory Hickson, OT Keyshaun Butler, LB Octavious Scott and LB Keanu Brown.
“These gentlemen are very committed to our program…they show good character,” remarked Allen. “That is one of the things that we try to instill in our players here at Douglass High School. They are not just valuable on the football field but off the field as well, so I am very excited about this season and we are a lot better than we were this time last year. I expect great things from our program.”
One thing people should expect as a strong hold on this team is the linebacking group that returns two young starters. Of all the positions on the field, the linebackers recorded the most tackles on the team.
“My linebackers [are my most experienced group] this year,” stated Allen. “We have two on the defense that are coming back that are linebackers.”
Douglass begins their ascension back to the top on Aug. 26 at Marist.
