Basketball season is over, meaning it was time for the GACA to hand out awards last week, as they named their All Star Rosters for the 2009-10 season. As always, DeKalb players were a mainstay on the rosters.
The girls team features two players from Redan in senior Nia Evans and junior Aneesah Daniels. Evans was one of the principal contributors in the team’s run to the state championship game. The post player dropped just over 14 points per game, and did it at a very impressive 56 percent clip. She also averaged 10 boards and 2.3 blocks per game. Aneesah Daniels, a junior point guard for the Raiders, also made the roster.
Kayla Lewis of SW DeKalb was part of an incredible senior class that lead the Lady Panthers to state titles in each of the last three seasons. The small forward was a big time scorer in SWD’s balanced lineup and also averaged nine rebounds and two blocks for the season, earning her an All-American Honorable Mention from the Sporting News.
Paideia’s Alex Abraham will also participate after a fantastic season that saw the center score 15 points per game while shooting 59 percent from the floor. Keep an eye on Chamblee’s Jasmine Camp next year, who made the roster as a junior.
Columbia’s Jershon Cobb and Christopher Grier helped pave the way to yet another state title for their team. Grier’s consistency from both the small forward and shooting guard spots was essential to the team’s success. Meanwhile, Cobb, a three-year starter at guard, averaged 23 points and 6.7 assists for the Class 3A champs. Cobb will play at Northwestern next season.
Miller Grove, the champions of Class 4A, is also represented by two players. Senior Donte Williams blossomed into one of the state’s top post players, averaging a double-double with 14 points and as many rebounds for the season. The big-time recruit also averaged a whopping 4.2 blocks. Junior guard Henry Brooks came up with several big outings in the state tournament, and will look to continue the winning tradition for the back-to-back state champs next year.
Nigel Snipes has been a key part to the revitalization of the Paideia program over the past few seasons. The junior played a part in their second consecutive state tournament berth this season by averaging nearly 16 points and nine boards per game. Watch out for the Pythons in Class A next year, when Snipes and highly-touted power forward Victor Nickerson both return for their senior seasons.
It wasn’t a great year for the Stone Mountain Pirates, but it was a solid season for senior Sharief Adamu. The senior’s season was shortened due to injury, but he made the most of it by posting totals of 12 points per game, including a 27-point outburst. He also stepped up with 10 boards and an impressive three blocks per outing.
Lastly on the roster was Dunwoody’s Javon McKay. McKay’s incredible 75-foot buzzer beater to force overtime against Riverwood in the region tournament will go down as one of the plays of the season. Unfortunately, the Wildcats would lose the game in a shocking five overtimes. However, the senior captain and Tennessee Tech commit should have little to hang his head about after a great career at DHS.
ON THE PITCH …
In soccer, Lakeside is off to a great start in Region 6, Class 4A which is likely the toughest region in the classification. They defeated a tough Tucker team 2-1, and then handled a strong North Springs team 3-1 to stay undefeated in region play. Rick Barbe’s team is exceedingly young with over two-thirds of the roster being sophomores and juniors, but they are still a team expected to make some noise.
TRACK NOTES …
Track and field is well underway, and plenty of DeKalb programs were in action last week. Lakeside took home third place at the 12th annual Stephenson Invitational behind a win in the 1600-meter from John Ewing, who finished two seconds in front of Zane Coburn from Grady. Antonio Carter was impressive for Miller Grove, winning the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13 ahead of his nearest competitor. Redan finished eighth, while the hosts finished ninth with 31 points.
