State championships were won in multiple sports last week. As often is the case, DeKalb teams figured heavily in the results, and took home a few titles of their own.
Two county teams dominated Class 4A at the state track and field championships. Winning the competition were the Tucker Tigers, who finished atop the field. The 4 x 400-meter relay team showed off the balanced lineup that won Tucker the meet, as they finished first place and a full three seconds ahead of runner-up Mt. Zion. The Tigers achieved another victory in the 4 x 100, where they finished just .2 seconds ahead of SW DeKalb, one of the key results that helped them finish in front of the Panthers. But the Tigers were also strong in individual events, getting victories from Tamera Harris in the 300-meter hurdles, Also finishing as runners-up in their respective races were Serena Clark (high jump) and Nakia Linson (200-meter dash), and Kim Miller (long jump).
Finishing second was another team from Region 6, as SW DeKalb was the runner-up. Morgan Snow’s stellar season continued with a victory in the 100-meter hurdles.
Marist also had a quality showing, finishing sixth. Eliza Andruskiewiscz finished second in the girls 800-meter run, while Sophie Harkins finished third in the 3200-meter.
Megan Wetterhall helped Lakeside’s cause with a first-place finish in the 1600-meter run.
In Class 5A, Redan finished tied for 13th place while Stephenson was 11th. The vast majority of the Jaguars’ points came in the 4 x 100-meter relay. Cynia Clark was the high finisher for the Raiders, getting third place in the triple jump.
CLASS 3A TRACK RESULTS …
Monroe was far away the best team in Class 3A, but St. Pius X represented DeKalb well as the runners-up. Ashe Taylor was the star of the show with her overall win in the shot put and third-place finish in the discuss throw. Kathleen Laporte finished second in the 800-meter run in a 2:16 time. Danielle Penk won in the pole vault competition.
Marist is state champs in girls tennis after a 3-0 win over Bainbridge to cap an incredible state tournament where they did not lose a match. Even more impressive, the team won it all without any seniors, as junior Shannon Murdy led the way. She won 6-0, 6-0 in the final to finish up an undefeated season. St. Pius X saw its season end at the hands of Woodward in the semifinals, 3-0.
MORE PLAYOFF RESULTS …
Marist finished fifth at the Class 4A golf state championships. Elton Chang and John Quirk both shot 78 to lead the War Eagles. Lakeside finished seventh.
In the girls game, Lakeside lead the county by finishing eighth overall. Allison Boden was one of the top performers of the day with an 86. Marist’s Savannah Grice shot a 79 as her team finished 11th.
St. Pius’ season continued into the quarterfinals of the Class A-4A state lacrosse tournament. The Golden Lions trailed 3-1 early on, but responded well en route to a 9-6 victory. They faced Westminster in the final eight.
Things are heating up in the baseball playoffs as well.
Redan swept Jenkins 9-7, 12-11 in Class 5A. Pat Smith hit two homers in the opener, while David Richard’s clutch hit won Game 2 for the Raiders.
Marist was still around after their three-game series with South Paulding. In the rubber match, Brett Dolan had three RBIs while Evan Geist pitched a complete game for the War Eagles who came back from a 2-0 deficit.
Miller Grove gave Dalton a major scare by forcing them to a third game, but they fell just short of the upset in a 5-4 loss.
Dunwoody stayed alive against Hart Co. in Class 3A, winning in three games. Matt McDonald gave the Wildcats the lead for good with a two-run single that broke a 4-4 deadlock.
In soccer, Lakeside and Marist both made the state semifinals. The War Eagles handled Darlington to set up a match with a strong McIntosh side. As for the Vikings, Rick Barbe’s team beat Whitewater in the second round after scoring the winner with 15 seconds left, and then defeated Upson-Lee 1-0 behind Nikos Papanikolopoulos’ goal. They hosted Starr’s Mill in the semis.
The St. Pius X girls advanced to the state semifinals with a 10-0 romp over West Laurens. Alexa Newfield scored five times to set up a final four showdown with Woodward Academy.
