OFFENSES SHINE: Red edges Black 32-31 at G-Day

The Georgia Bulldogs were divided between the Red and the Black teams for the annual end-of-spring G-Day game, and it was the Red team that came out on top with a 32-31 victory.

The Red team had the first-team offense and the second-team defense. The Black team featured the first-team defense and the second-team offense. At halftime, some of the players switched sides so coaches could see some of the reserves work with the starters.

But G-Day is never about winning or losing. Its about the team improving and working toward their goal which is winning the SEC and playing for a national title.

One of the things fans in attendance wanted to see is how the new offensive line was able to gel. The starting five consisted of guards Chris Burnette and Dallas Lee, tackles Kenarious Gates and Kolton Houston and center David Andrews. They did a solid job opening holes for running backs Ken Malcome and Isaiah Crowell. Malcome had eight carries for 34 yards and two touchdowns while Crowell had 10 carries for 39 yards. Malcome scored early in the second quarter and late in the fourth.

The offensive line also gave Aaron Murray time to throw. Despite only completing 41 percent of his passes, he did throw for 112 yards and a nice 33-yard touchdown pass to Tavarres King in the third quarter to give the Red team the 17-3 lead.

Another quarterback that had a strong outing is Christian LeMay, who is vying for the backup spot. LeMay, who was on the Black team went 7-of-10 with 154 yards one interception and a 66-yard touchdown pass to Jay Rome late in the fourth quarter that would have won the game for the Black team had the made the two-point conversion.

“It was a great spring,” Murray said after the game. “Our guys rose to the challenge of working hard and coming out with a great mindset of getting better every day.”

As many big plays the offense had, the defense was not far behind. One of the plays of the game came late in the fourth quarter when reserve defensive lineman Ricky Lowe recovered a Parker Welch fumble and returned it 62-yards for a score. That gave the Red team the 32-25 lead and they would ultimately hold on for the win.

The Black team had the projected defensive starters and Chase Vasser led the team with five tackles and one pass break-up. Alec Ogletree had a big day as well with four tackles and one interception.

The Red team featured the defensive reserves and Ramik Wilson led the team with seven tackles, one sack and one interception. Quintavius Harrow added five tackles and 1.5 sacks and Amarlo Herrera had six tackles and one pass break-up.

Head coach Mark Richt was really satisfied with the effort the team gave. But there was one position group he thought made strides this spring.

“Overall I though the offensive line improved throughout the spring,” Richt said. The offensive line really played well during the long drive.”

Richt was also impressed with the effort from the defensive line.

“It was good to see nose guard penetration through the middle of the line,” Richt added. “It’s encouraging to know we have the edge rushers that we have.”

The Bulldogs will now go through the offseason workouts before they get ready for summer practices. And before we all know it, the regular season will be here when the Bulldogs take on Buffalo Sept.1 at Sanford Stadium.
