Daily Dive: Savannah-native Moses Green returns to Blue Jackets as new head coach

Savannah High School hired Moses Green to be the Blue Jackets new head coach last week and brought in the Bethesda Academy grad after his successful run at Jenkins. Over the last four seasons, Green served as the defensive coordinator for Jenkins and led a Warriors team that capped off a 9-3 campaign in 2024 and finished the year with a 20.33 average margin of victory. Jenkins’ opened that season with a road loss against Lowndes and then produced an 8-1 Region 3 record with its only loss coming in a 34-31 overtime game to Calvary Day. The Warriors took a five-game win-streak into the playoffs and earned the No. 10 overall seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They defeated Northwest Whitfield at home 28-14 before eventually falling to No. 7 overall seed Stephenson. Jenkins reached the Class 5A state quarterfinals as a Class 5A school in 2023 and experienced massive success during Green’s time at the school..

Now, Green will be tasked with leading a Savannah program that carries a 36-game losing streak into the 2025 season after three-straight 0-10 campaigns and a 3-7 record in 2021—the last time the Blue Jackets won a football game. At just 34 years old, Green will be making his head coaching debut, but he has plenty of experience, especially when it comes to the Savannah area.  Coach Green spent four seasons at his alma mater of Bethesda and was actually on the staff as an assistant at Savannah High for three seasons where he experienced the school’s last playoff run—which came during its 9-3 season in 2016.

After his first stint at Savannah where he coached on Tony Welch’s staff, coach Green went to Claxton to once again coach with Welch. He also had one season coaching at Beach and then reunited with coach Welch in 2021 when he entered his most recent coaching stop at Jenkins.

“Coach Green is a disciplinarian and has the experience of turning programs around with the work we did at Savannah High and Jenkins,” Welch told Savannah Now about the hire. “He understands the process and has a great rapport with the kids. He’s a local man who knows a lot of people in the community. This is a stepping stone for him to become a head coach and it’s going to take a lot of work — but I know he’s up for the challenge.”

Savannah Blue Jacket athletic director George Brown was also positive about the hire and credited coach Green’ who earned a degree in civil engineering from Savannah State—for his credentials as a coach and educator.

“We wanted to bring in a great teacher as well as an excellent football coach to take over the program, and we found someone to fill both those roles in coach Green,” Brown said. “He brings a lot to the table as a successful coach at Jenkins and with his background with high academics as a teacher.”
