DAILY DIVE: Players to watch for in a star-studded Class of 2027 in the state of Georgia

The highly-anticipated \high school football season is finally off and running after games kicked off last week around the country. This month leading up to the season, major recruiting sites such as 247Sports and On3 released their initial 2027 player rankings for the sophomore class.

Both sites released their top-100 players in the Class of 2027 at the beginning of the month prior to the season.

From the state of Georgia, 247Sports has 13 players included while On3 has seven from the Peach State.

Here are some players to watch for in the Class of 2027 in the state of Georgia that are poised to burst onto the scene throughout the new season:

D.J. Jacobs, EDGE, Blessed Trinity

Standing at 6-foot-5, 215 pounds, Jacobs’ polarizing stature jumps off the charts for college football programs across the nation. The son of former University of Georgia defensive lineman, David Jacobs, the sophomore edge rusher has begun to make a name for himself after a superb freshman outing a season ago with Blessed Trinity. Jacobs totaled 81 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, six sacks and three forced fumbles in his first season of high school football, stuffing the stat sheet and making his presence known around the state.

Competing in Class 6A last season, Jacobs goes up against some of the top talent in the state of Georgia and still continues to excel, using his size to draw blockers towards him, opening lanes for his fellow pass rushers to make plays on the field. Last season he was awarded MaxPreps Freshman All-America, earned the Freshman Little Peach Award by The Touchdown Club of Atlanta (the title of the best freshman in the state), and was also awarded Class 6A-Region 7 Rookie of the Year. Jacobs took home team MVP after the Titans opener against St. Pius X after he continuously lived in the opposing back field last week. Jacobs is expected to remain a top player in the nation in the 2027 recruiting cycle with only room to grow in his young football career.

Kelsey Adams, OT, North Clayton  Adams is ranked as one of the top players in the state and remains as a top-20 player in the nation on both On3 and 247Sports. At 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, Adams already possesses the size to compete at some of the best programs in the country at the next level. He has received offers from programs such as Kentucky, Tennessee, UCF, Georgia State, UMass and Marshall with more schools likely to recruit the highly-touted sophomore.

For his size, Adams displays great mobility with the ability to run-block downfield into the second level. The offensive tackle is a multi-sport athlete excelling on the football field but also the basketball court and on the track as well, throwing discus and shot put for the Eagles. Adams will be a name to watch out for as this season progresses as he will accumulate offers over this year and his next two, ultimately becoming one of the top offensive lineman in the country.

LaDamion Guyton, EDGE, Savannah Christian Prep Having already accumulated many Power 4 offers, Guyton is regarded as one of, if not the best player in the state of Georgia along with Blessed Trinity’s Jacobs. As a freshman last year for Savannah Christian Prep, Guyton posted 82 tackles and 10 sacks in his first season with the Raider-football program. Guyton holds all the tools to become a successful edge rusher at the next level with his 6-foot-3, 230-pound frame, his speed off the edge and his technique to get around blockers in front of him.

At Savannah Christian Prep, Guyton plays alongside 5-star defensive lineman Elijah Griffin making the two the undisputed top pass rushing duo in the state of Georgia. Guyton’s offer list includes some of the top college football programs in the country with Georgia, Florida, Southern Cal, Tennessee, Oregon, LSU and Miami offering scholarships to the sophomore after his lone season of high school football. While its still early for the Class of 2027 and nothing is set in stone, Guyton will more than likely be at the top of most major recruiting sites’ lists by the time the Class of 2027 players are ready to move onto the next level.

Brayden Tyson, RB, Brookwood

Tyson is a name that should receive tons of attention in the coming years as he is regarded as one of the best running backs in the Class of 2027. Last year for Brookwood, Tyson ran for 642 yards and added four touchdowns after seeing significant time throughout numerous games in his freshman season. As a sophomore, it is Tyson’s backfield and he made that apparent last weekend at the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic last Saturday in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. He ran for 168 yards on 23 carries against Walton and added two touchdowns to his stat line— one from a yard out and the other a 43-yard direct snap that he took straight to the end zone.

Tyson stands at 6-feet tall, 235-pounds, a problem to bring down in the open field. While he shows the size of a typical between the tackles running back— don’t be fooled, Tyson is more than capable of making a man miss, using his speed to get to the outside to beat a defender around the corner. The Snellville-native is the son of former University of Georgia defensive tackle, DeAngelo Tyson, who played with the Bulldogs from 2008-2011 and was picked by the Baltimore Ravens in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft. After already running for over a quarter of his production last season in Brookwood’s first game against Walton, Tyson is primed for a huge sophomore campaign after an impressive freshman outing.

Andrew Beard, ATH, Prince Avenue Christian

One of the most versatile players in the state, Prince Avenue Christian running back Andrew Beard does many things on the football field to help the Wolverines succeed. After transferring into Prince Avenue Christian from Lincoln County High School, Beard has already proved that he is an impact-player for the Wolverines. Beard is an effective running back with his quick-cut play style and elusivity, making him a tough person to tackle when he makes it to the second-level. In his first game with Prince Avenue Christian in the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic at West Forsyth against the Wolverines, Beard lit up the stat sheet accumulating 193 yards of total offense (187 yards on the ground) and a touchdown.

Along with fellow Class of 2027 recruit, Prince Avenue Christian quarterback Ben Musser, the two combined for 379 rushing yards with Musser adding 192 of his own on just 13 carries. Beard averaged close to nine yards a carry in his first game with the Wolverines, an impressive feat in his first taste of action in the 2024 season. The Prince Avenue Christian running back has family ties to football as his father Jerry Beard Sr. was a running back at Appalachian State from 2000-2002, and his uncle Garrison Hearst was a decorated running back at the University of Georgia where he was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 1992 and was selected third-overall by the Arizona Cardinals the year after. Hearst was also a member of the inaugural class of the Georgia High School Football Hall of Fame in 2022. In the Wolverines high-powered offense led by Beard, expect the running back to continue to make some noise throughout this season.
