Daily Dive: Miller Grove enters tonight’s kickoff with program’s longest win-streak

Miller Grove High School has been known for its athletic achievements in basketball, but has been on a mission to breakthrough on the gridiron and turn the Wolverines into a football powerhouse. This offseason, head coach Melvin Brown pushed his team in the weight room and during padded camps, but also brought in representatives from the US Army to conduct team building training with a boot camp hosted at the school. The work has paid off so far as the Wolverines are 5-1 with an active five-game winning streak. Miller Grove’s active five-game win-streak is the longest in school history and matches the team’s 2012 streak that helped produce a school-record 6-4 finish. Miller Grove has made the playoffs four separate times since the 2016 season, but is still searching for the program’s first-ever playoff victory.

In Region 6, Westminster shook up the landscape with a 9-3 win over Holy Innocents’ to open region play and now Holy Innocents’ will look to bounce back against Miller Grove, who is one win away from matching its single-season school-record win-total. Class 3A Douglass is a common opponent that both Miller Grove and Holy Innocents’ has faced this season and the Astros’ only two losses this season on their 5-2 record came to these programs.

Last year was the first meeting in school history for Holy Innocents’ and Miller Grove and the Golden Bears earned a tight 14-7 victory. This game is flying under the Week 8 radar, but has historic implications and will factor in to the playoff push for a crowded Region 6.
